On the 21st November 2023, Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish was killed in action in the Eurotunnel, 7km off the coast of Folkestone.
Except the heavily redacted report is all a lie and the emotional scattering of his ashes is all an act.
This is the story of how he survives, how the 141 fake his death, and how he recovers - with Ghost right by his side.
A realistic fic about Soap recovering from a traumatic brain injury and discovering which parts of himself are left, and which parts Makarov stole from him. Full of hurt and comfort, angst and humour, this is a slow burn Ghost/Soap getting together fic with a happy ending.

“Ye wear that thing all the time, Ghost?” Soap asked, his bright blue eyes catching the glint of the light like the necklace did. His gaze lingered on where the chain was wound through Ghost’s fingers.
“I’ve never seen him without it,” Gaz said between them. Price gave a nod from the other side of Soap. They were all seated in a row at the bar, the golden glow of the lights casting everything in a warm haze.
“Funny, didn’t think ye were Catholic,” Soap licked his lips like he was nervous. His eyes still hadn’t left the small outline of Saint George.

“Ye gotta give me something, LT,” Soap joked as he scanned the Shadow’s lifeless form for anything useful, “Is it a unique mark?"
"All marks are unique, Soap,” Ghost’s sigh was crackly in his ear.
“I mean, would ye know if ye met them?” Soap continued, pulling a knife from a holster on the Shadow’s waist.
There was a pause over the comms.
“I’d know. Might take me a few minutes, but I’d know,” Ghost’s voice had dipped to a low rumble and Soap was pretty sure he’d been able to hear his own heart break over the words.

"'Bout time we got another reptile in here," Gaz says brightly. "Maybe now Cap'll finally invest in some proper heaters."
Soap chuckles, smoke leaking from his nostrils when he grins. "Ah'm plenty warm," he teases, drawing Gaz under his wing, the snake wriggling happily, his round pupils shining as his cheeks flush pink. He rests his chin on Soap's shoulder with a tiny hiss, content to curl around him and soak up the heat of Soap's fire.
"Ghost is out on a mission," Price tells him. "You'll only get to meet him when it's basically wheels-up, unfortunately. He's, ah, a bit of a prickly sort, but impress him and you won't have any problems."

Summary
Soap looked dumbly at the explosives, his tired mind taking a second longer to piece together the evidence than usual.
Shit.
“We have to go. Now.” Soap’s shaky voice sounded loud after being so careful to make no noise, but he didn’t care.
“MacTavish?” Price asked at the same time as Ghost uttered a concerned “Johnny?”
“Now.” He repeated fiercely, already moving to grab Ghost from the ground.
Soap, Ghost, Price and Gaz are on a mission to take out Hassan's allies. It goes south when explosives cause the cave system to collapse, injuring and trapping the team.

Summary
Soap gets stuck in a time loop during the Alone Mission and dies a whole bunch trying to get it right. He doesn't quite know how to handle it, especially when Ghost starts dying first and Soap begins restarting the loops without question- anything to have a chance of them both making it out intact at the end.
Then Ghost has his turn in the loops.

Summary
The first one to spot the toy is Price. The first one to use it is Gaz.
It goes like this: the 141’s been officially moved into a unit barracks together, individual bedrooms circling a commons with a reasonably-sized bathroom and what could charitably be called a kitchen if you were looking at it sideways. Separate enough from the main barracks and officer’s quarters to be technically private, but definitely more aiming to separate them just that bit more from the usual riff-raff, give them that extra edge of deniability. Not that they mind, those of them that socialize manage to do it plenty besides, and the ones of them that don’t appreciate having a place to sit quietly without interruption.
So when Price first sees the thick tube sitting on the coffee table as he preps for the morning, plastic and shiny and with a little clear strip down the side to see the soft pink insides, he assumes one of his Sergeants was having a little fun the night previous and forgot to clean up after. It’s a pleasant thought to be sure, one he’ll consider for the rest of the day, so he leaves it be.

Geralt immediately insists on pretending that Jaskier is his master, to make sure the bard is protected. If he likes wearing Jaskier's collar a little too much, well, that's his own business. There's no need to bother Jaskier about it.
