Kaidan's father had told him that after he'd taken his first life. And he'd taken that to heart, always considering if he would be able to handle the consequences of every action he took. It's why he was on the Normandy again, it was why he was with Shepard.

Summary
The galaxy tries to find the way forward, in the wake of the destruction of the reapers.
Post-ME3, destroy ending, but completely ignores the whole ‘destroy all synthetics’ thing. Basically, the reapers are destroyed and everyone else lives. Also assumes that Kaidan and Male Shepard had a romantic relationship in ME1.“You drank ryncol?” Kaidan hissed at him, clearly not prepared to let that one go.
Shepard shrugged, knowing it would only infuriate him more. “Yeah. But I survived,” he pointed out casually. -

Summary
Reconciling is hard.
Things never went according to plan, not really. Not with Shepard. Eden Prime. Noveria. Virmire. Alchera. Shepard was like a ship that skipped off the atmosphere every time he set a course for re-entry. With Shepard there was no script. No rehearsal. You just had to go with your gut.
