What begins as a character study of his seasoned, decorated new teammate quickly curdles into obsession when Lance Stroll starts untangling the chronology of Fernando Alonso’s life. It’s pathetic, really – how badly he wants to anchor himself to Fernando’s narrative, to become more than just another pit stop in his restless teammate’s career.
Despite the marriages and the parade of high-profile relationships, Fernando Alonso has never been in love. For a man who lives and breathes racing, both on and off the track, he’s always taken this as a feature, not a flaw. Yet there’s something disarmingly intimate about Lance’s insistence on combing through his life, as though the act itself could stitch him into it.

And it’s the who that keeps running through his brain. And he really really wishes that wasn’t the case. He’s had grid-crushes before. But the way he’s thinking about his teammate is fueled by something deeper than rivalry or close proximity. There’s something in Fernando’s eyes reserved just for him, and it’s enticing.
It’s really enticing.

It's like he wakes up in increments. First, the sound of the machines, again, droning on and on. Then voices, hushed but urgent. Then the pain, an insistent throb in his calf, his collarbone, his wrists. Finally, he opens his eyes and he sees that he is lying in a hospital bed.
He remembers next to nothing. Well, he remembers some things, some very random facts and a few important things from his childhood- like his family's faces, who they are (thank fuck he remembers that). He knows most general knowledge, like NFL rules and how to cook spaghetti and how to park a car, but has no memory attached to these facts. He knows all the Formula 1 world champions from when he was three to around age twelve. (Schumacher for five years in a row, Fernando Alonso twice, then Raikkonen, Hamilton, Button. Still got it.) But other than that- not much.
Lance wakes up from a crash and forgets.

Summary
When Fernando went into it, it was just a game.
A ‘thank you’ of sorts to the billionaire that’s signed him - be nice to the billionaire’s pay-to-drive-got-a-seat-because-of-nepotism son when the cameras are rolling and boom - he’s in the Stroll’s good books.
The Aston Martin team needs some comfort going into the 2023 season because Lance fell off a bicycle and broke his wrists. Great. Fantastic. If his new teammate weren’t the boss’s son he he’d bully him for it, but he’s trying to detach himself from the reputation that precedes him when joining each new team.
Has he been, in the past, the best teammate in the world? No.
Is he going to turn over a new leaf? Sure.
The last thing he expects is for the game he's playing to meet a challenge in the form of Lance Stroll. The Lance Stroll who asks him a million questions, doesn't give a shit about his reputation, and isn't even almost scared of him.
The absolute last thing he expects is to slowly fall in love with him.

It all started with a crash.
Well, technically, it started with a blue-eyed boy with blonde hair getting screamed at in a language he couldn’t understand when he was only 8 years old. He remembered looking at the boy, who couldn’t be much older than himself - (two weeks older, to be exact, he’d learn later) - and watching the spark disappear right out of those icy blue eyes.
That was the first memory Charles Leclerc had of Max Verstappen: Watching Jos Verstappen, Max’s own father, scream at this 8 year old child with an intensity that turned his face red and made every blood vessel in his neck look dangerously close to bursting.
But if anyone ever were to ask Charles when he started to realize that his feelings towards that same Max Verstappen he had known since childhood had begun to change into something else, something bigger, something terrifying he couldn’t - or wouldn’t - quite put his finger on, he would say that it all started with a crash.
Because of fucking course it did.
