Ilya's stomach turned over. He didn't even want to consider it, but he knew the answer. "Yes. But he silences his phone at night."
"Most phones these days have an option to let certain numbers ring through, even on Do Not Disturb. Do you think he'd be open to setting that up for you?"
Imagining that conversation made Ilya nauseous. Yes, no fucking doubt, Shane would be open to it if Ilya explained the reason. "I'm not going to ask him to do that."
Set during The Long Game, an alternate version where the plane scene doesn't happen. Instead, there's this: a car crash, a therapist's duty to report, and an urgent reckoning with priorities.

Summary
Joining the MLH had been his sole goal since losing his mother. He needed to get away from his father, his stepmother, and his brother, and hockey had provided him with the chance to escape.

He quickly established his outrageous image, and while his critics gasped in shock whenever he opened his mouth, he had the skills to shut them up.

"Oh honey, I missed you so much," Yuna whispered, pulling back just enough to cup Ilya’s face before dragging him back into another squeeze.
"I missed you too," Ilya murmured, sinking back into the comfort he so desperately needed.
Shane cleared his throat, making a cute, exaggeratedly pathetic sound. "Guys, we literally spent the whole day at my place. Like, yesterday."
Yuna looked at Shane for a moment as if she’d never seen him before in her life. "You won't understand how much I missed my favorite son," she said firmly.
Ilya let out a loud, triumphant laugh, his chest swelling at the title. Shane rolled his eyes playfully, tilting his head back toward the dark sky. "Godd," he sighed, though he was beaming.

On their final night in Ontario, Shane and Ilya head to the Hollander house for a dinner they’ll never forget. Shane decides to say Grace, but the words he chooses do more than just bless the food—they bridge the gap between two countries, two hearts, and a lifetime of hidden grief.

Summary
Luca, his face the color of a ripe tomato, leaned in with agonizing slowness. Troy held up his phone, showing Shane sandwiched between them before leaning in and planting a loud, dramatic smack on Shane’s right cheek. At the same time Luca placed a soft, fleeting kiss on Shane’s left cheek.
Shane burst out laughing just as the camera clicked their picture, the last of the tension dissolving.
“Perfect!” Troy looked at his phone with a wide, and in Luca’s opinion, a very evil smile, and sent the picture to the team group chat.
Ilya: BARRETT WTF WHY ARE YOUR LIPS ON MY BOYFRIEND
Harris: WHY DID YOU GET TO KISS HIM BEFORE ME?! I HAVE SENIORITY!
