    Summary

He thought the war was the end of the story.
But love—fierce, ordinary, and chosen—was just the beginning.

NB: This was my first fic posted online, written after years of writing quietly, with trembling hands and a heart full of aftermath. Fresh from the source, untouched by reposts or archives. Read slowly. Let it sit with you awhile. And maybe keep a cup of tea or a biscuit nearby—it’s that kind of story. –x

    (1) “Hello in there,” he said, gently, voice somewhere between a laugh and a prayer. “It’s your dad. I’m the one who made a total mess of his hair until yesterday and barely passed Potions.”

    Hermione watched, speechless.

Harry looked up at her, his face lit with something purer than hope. “I want them to know my voice,” he whispered. “Even if I say stupid things.”

“You don’t,” she said, her own voice trembling. “You sound like someone who’s in love.”

He blinked. “I think I am.”

Hermione smiled down at him, brushing his fringe off his forehead — shorter now, neater. “With me, or the bump?”

He leaned up and kissed her gently. “Both.”

She laughed against his mouth, her hand resting over his. “Good answer.”

The birds kept singing, the pancakes went cold, and the world outside didn’t matter. Not today.

    They had a morning.

    They had each other.

    They had everything they needed.

    (2) “I just…” She looked down at her belly, resting both hands there. “I want to be sure that I am ready. That this isn’t us just trying to put a bow on a life that’s been terrifying and beautiful and completely unplanned.”

Harry nodded, his voice soft. “You want to do it when it feels like joy, not rescue.”

She looked up at him again, tears on her lashes. “Yes. I want it to be our moment. Not because we’re afraid of what people will say. Not because we’ve made something fragile we need to protect.”

He smiled, leaned forward, and pressed a kiss to her hand. “Then we’ll wait. We’ll wait until the world is quieter—until it’s something that feels like dancing barefoot in a kitchen with our son asleep upstairs.”

Hermione let out a soft laugh, wiping her eyes. “You’re getting good at the metaphors, Potter.”

“I have a pretty brilliant muse.”

    (3) “He’s almost here,” Hermione said quietly, staring at the flutter of movement under her jumper.

“Yeah.” Harry looked at her belly, his eyes full of something vast and unspoken. “You know, I still wake up in the middle of the night and think… how did I get this lucky?”

She laughed softly, but her voice wobbled. “Me too. And I still have moments where I wonder if I’ll know what to do. What kind of mum am I?”

“You’ll be brilliant,” Harry said without hesitation, and when she looked down, his hand was resting on her bump, thumb still moving. “You’ve always known how to take care of people. I learned everything from you.”

“And I learned to be brave from you,” she whispered, eyes stinging.

    (1) “Born of two magical parents, both highly powerful in their own way. From the anniversary of their sixteenth year on this earth -their sixteenth birthday- for that year, the gods and goddesses will visit them, test the child until one claims them as theirs. They will be given gifts far beyond those of the magicals.” she rattled off thinking of the fables she grew up hearing, the same ones she told her son when he was young.

“Hermione Jean Granger, born with the blood of Veela and Gancanagh. The only Child of the Gods is my god-daughter. I have hidden her for these past 15 years to save her. On the 19th of September she will be 16, and I am now asking for your help to protect my family from the Death Eaters who are still free, and have heard that a Child exists. One who, if tortured enough, would become the child of Hades and be able to bring Tom Riddle back to life.”

    Summary

When the time comes, Harry Potter really wants to be a good lover. The only problem? He can’t trust anyone to show him the ropes without risking his face splashed across the Daily Prophet.

Until his best friend makes him an offer he can’t refuse.

    “He swallowed. ‘Why?’

Her voice softened. ‘Because it’s a gift I can give you. Something only I can. And because… I want to. I want to be the one who helps you feel safe. Desired. I want to be the person you remember helped you figure it out.’”

Set during the long, quiet summer after eighth year, The Summer Between is the story of how Harry and Hermione — best friends, battle-forged, tender and tangled — decide to explore intimacy as practice, never expecting it to become the one thing neither of them can surrender.

    Summary

Their gifts manifested, called them away to their higher purposes. Some of them left their friends behind. Some didn't. It depended on the person. It depended on their gift.

When Harry was gifted in fourth year, Hermione never imagined he'd leave her behind.

Some of the Chosen had yet to rise to their divine purpose, bringing many of the magical pantheon to Hogwarts in search of them. Hermione hoped to get through seventh year without thinking about Hades, never mind seeing him in person for the first time in years. Against her better judgement, she agreed to help him plan a wedding present for his lost bride. Their healing friendship could only last until he found Persephone, of course.

A shame really. Winter was far more pleasant with the God of the Underworld by her side.

“It’s the fringe, isn’t it?” Hermione asked breathlessly when they finally pulled apart, both gasping for air.

“It’s you,” Harry replied, his gaze wandering over her features, taking in every detail – the way her curls framed her face and the oh-so-familiar sparkle in her eyes. He tucked a loose curl behind her ear, letting his fingers linger against her soft skin. “It’s always been you…”

    (1) It had happened at the Leaky as well, he had seen how the memories affected her, how she had cried at them, and he had felt the loneliness of her, the way she changed, inwardly curling from the world. And he hated it. Not his Hermione, not her.

“Hey, hey,” Harry said, as he held her face in his hands. “You are brilliant. You always have been, even in this world I bet that you’re just… you’re amazing and incredible and the most wonderful person.”

“I don’t have any friends, Harry.”

“You have me,” he said. “In every universe, you have me.”

    (2) “Pros and Cons of having kids with Hermione Granger,” she said. “There’s a lot of cons.”

He smiled at her, “That’s just the cost of stuff, glasses and hair care, medical insurance.”

    (3) “Well, that makes me feel better about my choices,” Harry said, as he frowned.

Hermione looked at him, and she wrapped her arm around his uninjured one, “His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad-”

    (4) “I’ve been having trouble finding a new happy memory for the dementors,” he said to her, and she swallowed as she looked at him. “I think that’s something you could help me with.”

    (5) Sirius leaned towards them and squinted.

“Great work on that hickey Hermione,” Sirius said, making Harry choke on his coffee, his face turning red as Hermione covered her mouth. “Really, it looks very thorough, got some teeth marks in there too-”

And Harry quickly grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled it upwards, Hermione’s face was completely red as she hid behind her paperwork.

    (6) Harry stared at the words and he found his eyes closing, his head falling back against the back of the chair, his hand on the table as he sat there, as he felt his mind drifting. The only sound around him was the steady breath of Hermione, her legs as she stood and stretched, the soft shuffling of papers.

He could almost imagine being in the Hogwarts common room, the first moment that he realised he may have liked Hermione more than just a friend. When she had gone to the library to find books in defence of Buckbeak. She had always liked defending innocent animals, she was good at it, a naturally argumentative person.

    (7) “Harry,” she said, pressing against his chest. “We’re still on duty, we’ll get in trouble, under the Human Resources rules with inter-departmental relationships-”

“Oh, I love it when you quote scripture,” he said, and she smiled when he kissed her, when his hands pulled her heavily on her hips and she was fully seated on his lap, her hands in his hair as their lips met, hungrily, having waited far too long to do this.

    (8) Hermione started laughing then, seeing his stricken face. “Calm down Harry, you just… you got dragged into one of their adventures, that’s all.”

    “Define adventure.”

“You broke into Gringotts,” Hermione said.

    (9) “Do you remember sending me a Patronus?”

His eyes widened, “No. I don’t even know how to send one-”

“So you don’t remember sending me a message via your stag?”

He stopped by the gate, it was extremely early in the morning, nobody was arriving yet, just a few straddlers but Harry was looking at Hermione with absolute terror.

    (10) “Another fifty years, with you Harry?”

What could have been either minutes or hours later, the air shifted. Jasmine and vanilla joined the scent of dirt and pine, an immediate calm washing over him.

    Hermione.

Even with his eyes still closed, he knew exactly where she was. Without consciously deciding to do so, one of his hands reached out, finding hers with no trouble at all. Drawn to her like a moth to flame.

He nearly sobbed in relief when she twined her fingers through his, squeezing his hand gently. His muscles, tense from the stress and the cold, finally relaxed as warmth flooded his veins. And for the first time in a very long time - if ever - he felt truly safe.

To Harry, that said more than anything else could have. The endless questions that had whirled through his mind all night, if not for months or even years, came to an abrupt stop in a moment of clarity in the form of a single light that shined brighter than the stars, the moon, or even the sun.

    She was the answer.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    (1) It had been ages since he had seen her smile reach her eyes and suddenly it was as if the rest of the world didn’t matter, because in this moment all he could think about was how all he wanted to do was spend the rest of his existence on earth making her look just like this.

    (2) His free hand rose in time with his body as he twisted to face her, and before he could talk himself out of doing something so bold, his lips met hers. His hand cupped her cheek, the tips of his fingers brushing against the thick curls that framed her face as he pulled her toward him, his other hand moving to capture one of hers in a soft hold. The logical half of his brain was sounding the alarm bells, telling him how utter fucked he was because he just kissed his damn friend of thirteen years. Beyond that, he had not even gotten confirmation that she reciprocated his feelings! But the other side of his brain, the impulsive one that had often gotten him in trouble, howled at the moon with a devilish pride that he had finally gotten the courage to do just this.

    (3) Hermione was sitting on the sofa, her feet up on the edge of the coffee table and a pair of fuzzy light blue socks hiding her feet. The book rested on her thighs, propped open for them to enjoy, and the freshly bathed five year old was tucked under the safety of her arm like a small baby bird, snuggled into her side as he looked at the pictures before him.

Harry’s heart soared; the butterflies he was certain would have gone away by now seemed to rile up in his stomach, fluttering all the way into his throat. Some primal part of him was enjoying this picture. The girl he fancied, snuggled up with a child that Harry unknowingly considered his own. It fed a desire he was not even aware he held, and as much as it should scare him, he wanted to run head first towards it.

    (4) His name tumbled from her lips, and she spread her legs wider, offering him more room to explore. It did not take long for him find a rhythm that had his name being whispered like a prayer into the quiet of his bedroom, her hips rocking into him as the base of his palm ground softly against her clit as he worked his index and middle fingers into her tight channel.

    (5) Reaching up, Harry’s fingers swept the fringe of his hair off his forehead before adjusting his frames on the bridge his nose and he glanced over to Hermione, a slow grin spreading across his lips when their eyes met.

“Harry,” Hermione breathed as she attempted to regain her own breath.

    “Yeah?”

“Don’t look so…” Her mind pondered the best adjective to use. He looked positively pleased with himself. Like a cat who’d gotten into cream. And while it did not upset her to know she was the cause of this expression, it did slightly embarrass her. “Smug.”

Harry’s eyes crinkled as his smile widened with laughter. How he even thought this was going to change their relationship was beyond him. Hermione would always be… well--Hermione.

    (6) “You’re good. I’ve been trying to get him to his bed for the past forty-five minutes.”

Harry shrugged sheepishly before reaching up to ruffle the thick black hair on the back of his head. “Practice…that, and not giving in every time he bats his eyelashes at me helps.”

Hermione reached over to smack at Harry’s thigh playfully before she rose from the couch. “I do not do that!” Hermione defended, drawing her wand from her pocket and with a quick spell the stack of books she had brought began to tuck themselves away in a small canvas tote that lay on the floor next to the Christmas tree.

“B-But Auntie,” Harry mimicked his godson as best he could, wobbling his bottom lip just slightly as he batted his eyes at the witch who only rolled her eyes.

"Mr. Potter! Mr. Potter what on earth do you think you're doing?!"

Harry had managed to pull himself up on the top of the bar, standing on the well-worn wood as he fumbled through a leatherbound book she instantly recognized. In his other hand a small bouquet of wildflowers dangled, drooping from his fingertips, threatening to fall into patrons' plates and pints.

"No…" Hermione whispered, her face paling.

"She walks in beauty, like the night. Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that's best of dark and bright-" Harry began reciting a poem aloud. The same poem she'd read thousands of times before in the old text in his library. It was far from her favorite, but it's meaning wasn't lost. As he spoke, his voice ringing out over the growing noise of the frustrated customers, he began to walk down the bar towards her. "Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light. Which heaven to gaudy day denies."

Hermione's entire body froze, eyes widening as she watched him move ever-closer to her, his boots toppling over pints of ale and Butterbeer, spilling the contents over angry patrons and across the bar. Her heart came to a stop when their eyes connected, and for a moment she forgot how to bloody breathe.
"One shade the more, one ray the less, Had half impaired the nameless grace. Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o'er her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express, How pure, how dear their dwelling-place." As he spoke the lines, it didn't feel as though he was merely reciting a poem, but rather reading them directly to her heart. This was not just some stupid attempt for him to get back in her good graces. No, this was a grand gesture. This was what she wanted-or rather what she'd mentioned wanting to him before. Had she known then that it would involve a mortifying amount of embarrassment, she might have reconsidered.

"Mr. Potter! I will not ask again!" Tom shouted, his face turning purple in his anger as he fumbled to pick up spill after spill behind Harry. "Get down!"

Harry gave Tom one last fleeting glance, giving a sympathetic smile before his eyes dropped back to the book in his hand. "And on that cheek, and o'er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent," he said slowly, carefully stepping over a plate of shepherd's pie and avoiding toppling over another drink as he moved to an opening not far from where Hermione sat. With a less than graceful dismount from the bartop, Harry moved toward her. As he drew close, she could note a distinct tremble in his hands that gave away his nervousness. "The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent."

Hermione slipped down from the barstool, leaving her coat and purse hanging on the side as she moved to meet Harry halfway, closing the distance between them before she glanced around at the crowded bar whose sole focus was the two of them. "Merlin, have you gone mad, Harry?"

"Possibly," he said plainly before thrusting the wildflower bouquet towards her.

Just what the world needs, another Harry and Hermione fall in love in the tent fic. But! Hopefully this is done with heart and definitely no bashing.

They were a few spots away from the last location they were together with Ron, but it didn't stop Hermione from glancing up at the sound of breaking twigs, or the rustle of leaves, or the quieter whispers of wind. By some animal instinct, every time she glanced up he did too. He couldn't help but think of frightened deer, their ears pert and rotating, eyes focused, alert, listening for wolves. The main difference for them was that they wanted the wolf to come.

His glanced away from the empty forest to Hermione's dark eyes, still searching. "He won't find us." He used the sharp tone again, he still didn't mean it that way.

Her eyes moved to his, injured, her mouth bowed in pain. He felt a stab of remorse. To his surprise she moved closer to him instead of turning away. Their spheres of sadness had been separate the last few days, their moroseness quiet, however loud it felt inside his head.

"Do you remember, in the tent, that night we made a fort?" Her voice is low, sleepy.

    "Yeah?"

"I'll wait for you there, should I leave before you do. Will you do the same? Instead of King's Cross? Now that you've given the cloak away?"

"Sure. And you know, if you get there before I do, I'll be close behind."

She pushes her face into his chest with a deep breath and some part of him still feels seventeen.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    (1) As their visits became more consistent, he found that his mood was much improved. He was able to last many more days feeling better - feeling more whole . At first, he may not have noticed that she was slowly healing the broken bits inside his soul. She may have not known at the time what her companionship was doing, but the thing Harry understood, now more than ever, was that Hermione Granger was someone he couldn’t live without.

    (2) “Need a warming charm?” he asked her.

Burrowing into him further, she shook her head. “No, the chill is welcoming, actually. Makes me feel alive.”

He knew what she meant without needing her to explain. He felt the same way - the feeling of the cold as it seeped through his cloak making his exposed skin numb was welcoming.

    (3) “Harry, I come because you need me,” she eventually answered resolutely before adding softly, “and because I need you.”

The clouds above shifted, and the nearly full moon above shined down brightly on them. He was sure she had never looked more beautiful. The way her curls bounced with every twitch of her head, the way her nose and cheeks were tinted pink from the cold, the way her long lashes blinked away a lone tear that streaked down her cheek to cling to her chin.

    (1) "Significant how, sir?" Hermione questioned cautiously as the headmaster moved to leave.

Dumbledore paused at the doorway, turning his body only slightly to survey her with a sombre, regretful smile. "I believe they may be glimpses into the future."

    (2) "I don't know why I'm acting strangely," she muttered.

"You saw something about me, and now you're thinking too hard about it," he told her as he leaned back against the wall and crossed his arms. "I've known you for years, Hermione. I know how you get when you dwell too hard on things."

She paused and looked at him, as though seeing him for the first time. It felt like the most natural thing in the world to reach a hand up to brush his messy fringe away from his eyes. "You really do, don't you?" she said softly, her trembling hand settling on his cheek.

    (3) "The eye was weeping before I found you, Granger. If there are tears, you are being shown the future; the one you need to change to rid yourself of the curse and pass it on."

"So that's what needs to be done? Saving a life passes the curse on?"

Nott nodded. "Correct. I saved your life, and now you're the cursed one."

    (4) "It's called the Postea Visus Curse, and that it is passed on when a life is saved. Documented cases and retellings of those who have suffered are rare; many of those afflicted choose to sequester themselves upon passing the curse on, such is the burden of their knowledge."

    (5) Hermione narrowed her eyes. "You think you know me so well, Nott? What sort of person do you think I am?"

Theo leaned forward in his seat, clasping his hands together on top of the desk. "You want the best for the world and everyone and everything in it, and you'll do what it takes to get it. It's admirable, Granger, truly, but if you see something that… goes against that, I fear you would lose yourself trying to change it."

    (6) "I knew you were going to lose the Quidditch cup that year to Hufflepuff."

His jaw dropped, and he clutched a hand over his heart. "And you didn't think to warn me?"

"What? It's not as though it would have changed anything."

"Well, aren't you a piece of work?"

    (7) "I take it you didn't see this coming, then?"

    "I…uh – no?"

"Good. I'd been worried about that."

    Bookmarker's Notes

    (1) “You’re always my first choice,” he admits and she is not ready for it. Her heartbeat starts to stumble. There is ringing in her ears. “And maybe that’s the problem. Or maybe that’s the problem that I don’t see it as a problem. I’m sure I haven’t the greatest at articulating that point, given that I’m usually a giant idiot when it comes to anything subjected or, well, my own needs but… you have to understand that you’ve been the only one that’s ever seen me this way, dark and mopey and whatever. I guess that’s the point.”

    (2) Sex with Harry is terrifyingly intimate.

She will never admit to obsessing over it, over the moment, the minute and everything in between. It’s lived with a part of that basks in self-loathing, in between every failed relationship, every partner that just hasn’t been quite right. She will never admit to being there, right there, and maybe with the right amount of courage, admitting to craving this kind of intimacy with him because he would get it, he would get her and that is all that she’s every wanted it.

    (3) His mouth fans over her scar, just where the d ends by her elbow.

“I’m sorry,” he whispers, and her chest heaves under the pressure of the apology. “I’m sorry that I don’t tell you enough. I’m sorry that you followed me on the run. I’m sorry no one acknowledges the things that you lost, that you always have to be the loudest in the room because of some stupid bloody moniker that doesn’t define you.”

“The Brightest Witch of Her Age?”

Harry scoffs, laughing. The window by the bed is starting to set into shadows with the leaving sun. She can’t remember why she kissed him. He can’t remember why he kissed her back.

    “That,” he says too.

She shakes her head. “It wouldn’t have matter what they called me,” she replies. “I would have followed you anywhere. You deserved to live just like the rest of us. You deserved peace just as much.” She stares into the room, watching the shadows of the trees wave into the room. She smiles a little and thinks of the roses. “I’ve loved you for my entire life, Harry,” and suddenly, she’s in a confession, soft but not desperate. The honesty is quiet. “In different shades too,” she says. “But I’ve loved you and continue to love you and you know what’s scary? How easy it is for me to lie her and think about how every part of you fit into me, how the way you touched me made absolute sense, maybe too much sense. How I want you to touch me like that again and again and because no one has ever made that kind of sense before.”

    (4) He could say a million things in reply. They both know that. Instead, his fingers drift over her hip. He grabs the quilt of their bed, pulling it over them – not all the way, as if he still wants to continue to see her, just her. It had to be you, he doesn’t say either. But she hears it, sees it in the room as their hands link and sit between them.

“I love you too,” he says. His eyes start to flutter and she laughs a little as he starts to settle. They are okay. They are always going to be okay. “Always,” he says softly, his breath warm, and his mouth imprints right just below her ear.

Finally, he is the first to sleep.

“I am,” she murmurs. “Don’t get me wrong – you are, by far, the brightest part of all of this for me. I would follow you to the literal ends of the earth and back again, but it’s really quite simple… I think we’ve always been older than whatever we are. I don’t know. Am I making any sense?” She tries to laugh it off because he hasn’t stopped her and she doesn’t think she could stand a silence right now. You came along, she wants to accuse him. So listen. “I think Ron was easy because he was there and I watched you walk to your literal death and I couldn’t even call you mine in that moment and I was so angry and sad and desperate because if you were gone, I didn’t make sense. Me. That’s what scares me about you. That I feel like this.”
