Some of the bullets hit the ground near Wil, sending dirt flying, making Wil’s heart jump right into his throat. “Fuck, fuck, fuck!” He yells, and he lunges for better cover nearby, only to fall short and collapse into the ground as something tears across the side of his head, sharp and burning hot.
He screams, he falls, and then he shrieks even higher when hands grab him and yank him to the side.
(Or, it's a zombie apocalypse. Traumatized skrunkles + very cold environment = hugs. For warmth. And also spontaneous adoption.)

Summary
From what Tommy can see of her, he thinks she’s very pretty. She’s wearing a pale lilac dress, and her hair is a deep, rich brown, and she’s shielding her face from the sun with a large, brimmed hat; humming a song that has no words with a smile so clear in her voice that Tommy doesn’t feel as cautious about meeting a person for the first time, let alone a princess.
“Um, hello,” Tommy says, in the language that humans understand. But the princess doesn’t answer him. She doesn’t even turn around, almost as if she doesn’t notice that Tommy is there, standing awkwardly at her garden gate. Quietly, as not to startle her, Tommy enters, being very mindful of the plants she’s growing, making sure that his tail doesn’t swing out behind him either, and tries again.
Or: Tommy is a dragon looking for a princess in a tower. Instead, he finds a windmill and a humble farmer’s wife.
