Summary
Spock believed things between him and the captain were proceeding well after Yorktown; their lives settling into normal parameters and perhaps, even evolving into something more.
But after picking up new crewmembers from Starbase 2, things begin to unravel, and a chasm grows between them. Then, the unthinkable happens. Jim’s past catches up to him – reopening old wounds and laying new ones – refusing to let go until Jim has paid the ultimate price.
Can Spock and the crew make it to Jim before his past exacts its toll? And can the distance between them and the scars they bear be healed before it’s too late?

McCoy feels his heart stop. The breath rushes from his lungs. It's Jim that recovers enough to speak first.
“What do you mean, transform?”
“During Pon Farr, when Vulcans give way to instinct and primal urges, they… change. Vulcans are descended from felines. The form they take on is similar to that of their ancestors.”
McCoy snorts. Maybe the terror is getting to him. Maybe he’s delirious. He ignores Jim’s look of shock. “Spock turns into a pussy cat? That's what you're so worried about?”
M’Benga sighs and turns. His fingers trace along the edge of the side table. “Not a cat, Leonard. What Spock will become more closely resembles our definition of a monster.”
