Castle Byers rises ahead of him.
What’s left of it, anyway.
Broken boards jut from the ground at crooked angles, the remains of towers collapsed inward on themselves. Sheets hang in tatters, damp and heavy with rot. It’s smaller than it used to be. Sadder.
Will approaches it without slowing.
He lowers himself down, stiffly, knees hitting dirt and leaves. Then he crawls forward, hands pressing into the earth, shoulders squeezing beneath splintered wood. Inside, he lies flat on his back, arms at his sides, staring up at nothing.
He does not move.
The forest goes very still.
Or: Will Byers gets possessed. No help arrives. He must try and survive the Upside Down, again, as he fights through many close calls (how is he not dead?)
And the party lives with the guilt.(i cant do summaries, but this is before season 5 btw, was to chicken to post it before it came out)

Then his foot caught. He stumbled, hit the ground hard.
“No,” he thought.
He scrambled upright and looked up.
The spike, no, the leg, was coming. Gigantic, massive, impossibly fast. He barely had time to register the movement before it was on him.
He tried to jump. Tried to dodge. Tried anything.
It hit.
Pain attacked instantly. Heat. Pressure. Blood. Too much blood. Warm and sticky and everywhere. And then he realized: he wasn’t just hit, the spike had gone through him. The Mindflayer’s leg had driven him into the air, and now he was impaled, suspended.
