It tucked its talons behind its back. “Good evening,” it said obediently. Speaking was always a risk, no one wanted a noisy hawk, but it could take an obvious hint.
The swordsman pointed the sword in its direction. “You work for The Brotherhood.” His voice was raspy.
He seemed to want an answer. The rain dripped out of the hawk’s hair. “Not anymore.”
“Oh.” The swordsman eyed it. The empty spots for weapons and gear at its belt, the scorch marks and slashes in its clothing, its meek stance. He cleared his throat again. “You ran?”
The hawk nodded.
“Heh.” The swordsman lowered the point of the sword. “Do y’wanna stick together?”

They never felt like they knew what they were doing, how was this going to do, classes and group therapy added to the mix?
A tall man with glasses and long faded pink hair sat down one seat away. He had a bag from the hospital coffee shop clutched in one hand and a coffee cup in the other. “You gluten free?” the man with the pink hair asked, glancing in his direction and then frowning at thin air. He snatched his glasses off his face and polished at the lenses with one hand.
Ranboo glanced at him uncertainly, but there was no one else in this corner of the room. They’d chosen it specifically because they could have their back to the majority of the room when they were sitting in it. “No?” he ventured.
The man with the pink hair held out the paper coffee shop bag. “Got a ginger cookie but I changed my mind. Do you want it?”

The smell of blood filled the flier’s cockpit as Phil coaxed it over the landscape, wings wobbling as they crested a hill. The machine was solar-powered and they’d stolen it off the field before it recharged, and with the cloud-covered sun going down now, he’d been getting emergency power - land immediately warnings blinking at him from the display for the last ten minutes. It was taking absolutely all of his concentration to keep the machine in the air, using the last gasps of the machine’s energy reserves to rise over obstacles and then glide down on the other side. “You doin’ okay there, Techno?” he managed, attention on the darkening landscape in front of him. There was an updraft over there, if he could just catch it and glide further-- they were so close to making it out.

“I have heard much of you, emperor Philza, and I have respect for you. Therefore, I’ll offer you a deal. You will surrender. You will kneel before me, right here, right now, and beg for mercy. Then I’ll take you to the Nether with me, and you’ll become my prisoner, slave, and personal servant. Or-”
The Blood God raised his netherite blade, pointing the tip straight at Philza’s heart.
“-I will allow you to die with a sword in your hand, and once you’re dead, I will slaughter your children.”
Philza fell to his knees without hesitation.

Philza had been prepared for a lot of things when he was taken as a war prize: the loss of his basic freedom, the heartbreak of being separated from his sons, the indignity of being reduced into the piglin king’s “pet”.

We were peaceful, before the embargo. We just wanted trade deals, we collaborated with anyone who’d help us build our railroads. We never struck the first blow. After the embargo– after that winter– we figured that wasn’t gonna work.
Interviewer: So you adopted some new technologies.
Philza: Yeah, we had innovations in our manufacturing, our greenhouses, our fucking sanitation– but that’s not what you’re talking about, right? Forget the emperor shit. If you’re interviewing me about this, you don’t want to hear about the greenhouses.
