His father had long since disappeared back down the path without a backward glance as he left his son alone in the nation of a god who wanted him and his people dead.
Kaeya was eight years old, soaking wet, in a foreign nation, alone.

Summary
Riddle wouldn’t meet his soulmate until his first year at NRC.
The entrance ceremony was already in full swing, and Riddle had been focused, listening intently to every word from his future professors, mentally noting every rule, every expectation.
Then someone grabbed his hair.
“It’s red, but it’s not hot!” an obnoxious voice said, tugging at the strands like a child testing a toy.
Riddle’s reaction was immediate, reflexive. Without hesitation, he drew his magic pen, set the boy’s sleeve ablaze, and promptly hurled him across the room.
Gasps filled the hall. Riddle was trembling with fury, vision narrowing. How dare he? Who the hell did he think he was?
It took two teachers to hold him back before he could lunge again. His heart pounded, magic sparking at his fingertips.
And then—finally—he looked.
The idiot who’d just ruined his first impression was grinning up at him from the floor, still half-smoking from the fire spell. And the moment their eyes met—
Riddle’s world exploded into color.

Yet, in all it's years, the Dark Mirror has never seen such a thing.
Their soul is shapeless, molding and moving beneath it's critical eye. Twisting in anxious spirals as the student shifts their feet. The longer it takes, the more red their ears become, and the more colors bloom within the shapeless confines of their soul. There is no direct answer for them, it would seem. For there is no where this soul should go, and no where this soul could not. A burst of color draws it in, a hope, or perhaps, prayer this child has. Yes, their choice is a smart one. If any Dorm could contain an unpredictable, wildly beautiful thing such as this soul... it would be that one.
