After a while, trapped in the bathroom, the hunger and the cold and the infection faded, being replaced by a floaty kind of emptiness. Sometimes, after he had slept as much as he was able and finished counting the tiles twice over, people came to visit him. Sometimes it was Lawrence, the lying bastard who had left him there, but mostly it was his parents. Whenever they came, he tried to cover his ears, but nothing could block out their scolding. Sometimes it was a nice lady he didn't recognize, who poured water down his throat then left without a word.
