    Summary

He is saved from permanently being deleted, but the Caine that returns is no longer the same AI that once offered all the fun in the world in a silver platter. Damaged by the remains of Able and broken down into a shell of himself, Caine barely reacts. Any other genuine reaction to them is fear. Pomni, convinced that despite his wrongdoings he still deserves compassion, makes it her mission to help the AI recover emotionally while Kinger tries to fix his coding and get rid of the effects of Able’s torture.

As the Digital Circus grows quieter and more uncertain, the group is forced to confront a difficult question: can something that was never human truly heal, or is Caine too broken to ever return to who he once was? If so, is forgiveness even an option?

    Summary

"Hey...can I ask you something kind of weird?"

"Shoot," Rocky says, his voice sounding amused. "But not actually shoot."

Grace wants to laugh at the joke (he's been getting better at joking and sarcasm) but instead he swallows, his fingers tracing idle patterns on the blanket. The ache from earlier at the classroom, the beach, the constant invisible wall feels closer tonight.

"What does it feel like... to touch you?" he asks. "I mean, if we could. Your carapace. Your claws. What would it feel like to me?"

Rocky is quiet for a long beat. When he sings again, his melody is thoughtful and gentle.

"Hard. Rocky, like name. Like...strong stone that is alive. My claws are sharp but careful. My body pulses a little when I am happy. Like singing Grace can feel instead of hear." He pauses, then adds with a soft, almost shy trill, "What does human skin feel like, question? To me, I wonder."

    He imagines it.

In his mind, the xenonite shell vanishes.

Or: Grace is touch starved and Rocky wants to make it better

    Summary

After stabilizing the Circus and coming to terms with their permanent life there, the gang agrees to bring Caine back- on the condition that Kinger rewrites his code and removes his power over the world.

Caine awakens to find himself on relatively equal footing with humans for the first time in his life. Can he learn to listen and understand them now that he's no longer bound to his program's original purpose? Will the humans ever be able to truly forgive him for everything he's done to them?

    Can anything truly change?

    Summary

King had no time to dwell on it, however, as he typed in the last line of code and pressed enter. By now, everything was unstable. He could even feel himself shake and glitch out (it felt almost like his skin was being torn off and put back on over and over again). The computer put on a loading bar, and he watched it go forward before reaching the very edge and stopping right before completing.

“[BOINK!]” he cursed as he reached out and shook the console.

The bar held still for an agonizing minute, in which Kinger could feel his insides being mixed up, a painful, nauseating feeling, but he held his ground and kept his eyes locked onto the computer screen.

“For the love of God please,” he said and smacked it with his hand. The bar finally moved and dinging sounded, not only from the computer, but from seemingly everywhere around him. The glitching stopped, and Kinger breathed a sigh of relief as everything stilled.

    . . . . . . . . . . . .

    Or, alternatively:

What if Kinger had not accidentally killed Caine?
