The city is loud... and that seems like such a stupid thing to say. But to Ed, it's louder than loud. A constant roaring in his ears that won't go away no matter how long he hides under the bed or stuffs his fingers in his ears. He's trying not to let it get to him. He's trying to be normal. He's trying not to show Roy just how defective he is.
He knows it's not going to work.
He's a damn ticking time bomb and no matter what he does, he can't seem to stop the clock.

Now that Mustang has Ed and Al away from the hell-hole known as Resembool, he now has to decide on more permanent accommodations. At an orphanage. Definitely at an orphanage and not with him. There's no way he can take two kids permanently. He lives in a one bedroom apartment! An orphanage would be a much better place for them to grow and thrive.

Amestris is known for its leader’s love of warmongering, yet the war in Ishval left behind a dark and ugly stain on the soul of the country. Lieutenant Colonel Roy Mustang is determined to do whatever it takes to get rid of that mark, right the wrongs of the past, and transform this government into one that works for the people. Not against. With this single-minded drive and purpose, he trekked out to some backwater town called 'Resembool' to search for two terrorists and local alchemists known as the Brothers Elric.
Intel has informed him that the Brothers aided and abetted the bombing of Resembool’s train station, leaving many civilians dead. He finds them. But they aren't anything like he expected.

Edward didn’t say anything. His eyes stung and his throat burned, but he didn’t move.
When Roy held out his hand, Ed hesitated for a long time.
This could be some horrible ploy—some last-ditch effort from his stupid social worker to get him into a house that could deal with him. Roy was a police officer. He was a war veteran. He knew how to get people to do what he wanted.
On the other hand, Edward knew Roy. He knew how he liked his coffee and that sometimes he liked to procrastinate on his reports and that he liked to shoot goo-goo eyes at Riza. He knew what Ed’s favorite books were, and he knew about Al. He knew, intimately, what Ed went through.
Ed reached out to grab Roy’s hand.

Known as the Mad Puppy of the Military, Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist, was not someone one would want to associate with. According to the general consensus, one word fit back to describe him best – "unhinged".
Favoured by the Führer himself, ignorant of others' opinions, accused of his brother's murder by none other than himself... truly a mad dog. But for whatever reason, a more childlish moniker stuck.
All in all, Roy was not looking forward to his newly assigned mission that involved none other than the notorious Fullmetal.

Edward struggled to adjust to life in Munich and often missed Amestris, but living with Alfons Heiderich gave him comfort. When Alfons suggested repairing old toys for a nearby orphanage before Christmas, Edward reluctantly agreed, finding the work nostalgic yet healing. Together they restored the toys, and seeing the children's joy brought Edward a sense of peace.
Later, as they shared tea in their small apartment, Edward realized that helping in this simple way made his homesickness hurt a little less, and he felt closer to belonging in this new world.

This World is cruel, and cold and bitter, and it isn't even Ed's. He doesn't need to interfere, he doesn't want to, even. Until he can escape, he can just keep his head down and stay quiet, right?
He thinks this World is fake, or hell maybe. It feels different, disconnected, and he wonders whether the people around him are alive. He isn't always sure.
Except there are living ghosts around him, and children are going missing, and he has seen how war breaks a nation and he can't leave these people to suffer just because he's foolish enough to hope that this is a hallucination.
(Ed, and learning to care after you've had your home ripped away. Learning to live, when you've sacrificed your life, body and soul. Learning to breath in a new World. And learning to fight, because it's all you have left.)
