Summary
Perhaps in another life, Percy Jackson would have taken godhood. Maybe when Gods were actually something to look up to. Maybe if someone wasn't very good at messing things up. Perhaps if he knew something good about them, Percy would actually desire to be a god.
But fresh out of two wars made by enemies of the gods, he just can't see it. Not when he's got Annabeth, who has a similar mindset to him nowadays.
Little would anyone know that Percy's rejection of Godhood would actually be the leading catalyst to the end of several gods. Not through war, or punishment... or even a battle.
But from a desire for change. One that started with the fall of Apollo.
(Or Percy and Annabeth have trauma after Tartarus. Apollo stays mortal after Trials of Apollo and moves in with Percy and Annabeth at their beachside cabin. The result is a series of dominos falling, breaking the fragile rule of fear that Zeus created with his own flaws. One by one, they leave, leaving Zeus on a lonely throne.)

Tartarus does not slumber, at least, not in the way his sister Gaia had decided to rest. He watches over his creations, ensures that they continue to fight, an endless horrific struggle for survival. So when two little half-blood began tearing their way through his realm with more brutality and efficiency than most of his immortal children, he took notice. Such wonderful little abominations these children were, such fun little toys.
Or an AU where Percy and Annabeths trip through tartarus is much worse, and the primordial himself is not so passive. With all of the deliciously fucked up things I wish could have been in a YA novel. Allegiance shifts, sanity crumbles, and at the end of it all they have to ask themselves, was it worth it?
