As a child John both dreads and longs for the day he will get his first soul mark. He dreads the day he will find words scrawled across his skin because as the years go by he becomes painfully aware that he doesn't look at girls the way he is supposed to, that he looks at boys instead. And yet, he longs for the day he will find words on his skin because it will mean that there is someone out there who won't hate him for what he is.
