Summary
At Lady Danbury's Four Season's Ball, Colin is a little stunned by his friend arriving dressed as if she were a member of Parisian High Society, and decides not to wait until later that evening to go speak to Penelope, perhaps even dance, when he sees Cressida Cowper step on her hem.
A shocked Colin, along with Lord Debling, ensures that her hem is mended so she can stay at the ball.
Penelope's hopes for the night had already gone awry, while she was dressed differently, her awkwardness showed through. Then Cressida stepped on her hem, Debling running off to get a maid to help her. But when Pen tries to escape her humiliation, Colin Bridgerton stands in her way, and ensures that she has no reason to leave.
Her anger with him notwithstanding, she has no choice but to stay, and the night continues to improve, in some unexpected ways.
Queen Charlotte was having a rather dull season so far, the Debutants of 1815, while beautiful of course, left her rather unimpressed. And the first ball of the season had little to recommend it beyond the usual finery, the woman in the green dress the only person to catch her eye all night.
