Its condition has gotten worse, so says the princess. She has noted how it is more lethargic, her finding it asleep more often than awake, despite its best efforts to remain alert. Sometimes it will drift off in the midst of her replacing its bandages—its injuries are still not healed, leaking void in time with the beating of its abyss-consumed heart, enough to soak the gauze beneath its bandages partway through the cycle—and she will struggle to get it to awaken. Furthermore, it has a new source of pain, though one it does not understand itself. Some aching sensation amidst its abdomen. Nothing like it recalls having ever experienced, though its memories have been cracked and warped by centuries spent confined in dreams.

Now, Hornet has been whisked away to Wyrm-knows where, Quirrel is left with nothing but a bell and a cranky Relic Seeker to guide him, and a new type of horrific infection is sprouting up at an alarming rate... Maybe he still has some adventuring left in him, after all. (Or Quirrel and Lemm become unexpected best friends while Hornet beats up silk-possessed bugs in a cogwork wonderland.)

Now, in a changed Pharloom where everything is either in pieces or falling apart, and a new Queen who may be worse than the one they've just gotten rid of begins to stir, Lace finds that the world and something inside of herself won't give in so easily.
Hurting on both the inside and the outside, and accompanied by a very annoying pilgrim who keeps trying to be her friend, Lace finds herself at the forefront of a battle which will change not only the course of Pharloom, but the trajectory of her life forever.
