Summary
Iris’ rapid development was nothing short of both a miracle and a mystery to Herlock Sholmes.
The milestone markers in all of the childcare books were approximations, of course – there was no precise given time for when each motor and cognitive skill would unfold, and it was normal for it to vary with each child. Sholmes had tried to chalk it up to him being extra surprised as a first-time parent… but nonetheless, everything felt so soon.

Summary
In many ways, taking on the role of father has been little more than a pantomime act. A mould he has haphazardly pressed himself into, but rarely has he felt the tight and ill-fitting walls of that mould more than right now, scrabbling for something to say.
Iris must see the conflict on his face. It is the sudden tilt to her head and the concerned worry in her lip that finally pushes the words into his mouth.
“It’s a marvelous story, my dear.” he manages at last, forcing a reassuring smile. It is not a lie. It is marvelous. Sholmes can appreciate good literature when he sees it and this, indeed, has all the hallmarks of a competent novella and would have impressed even if it had not been penned by an eight-year-old’s hand.

Summary
They’ve been avoiding it. This week has been nothing but forays into the past and yet that chapter—their chapter—has been left untouched, glossed over, bookmarked for later. Ten years has settled between them like an intangible weight, a glass partition, one that took shape when Sholmes first saw him in the hotel lobby two days ago, one that has followed them into train compartments and ship cabins and even into Baker Street, and one that remains here with them in the room right now, its presence uncomfortably apparent.
As for why they’ve been dancing around it, Sholmes doesn’t know. All that they were, all that they are now—maybe it just felt too big to be squeezed between everything else. It needed its own place, somewhere separate to masked convicts and shady government dealings, somewhere safe from tampered autopsy reports and goodbyes said too soon.
He supposes this is that place: a dim hotel room with expensive glassware and neat linens and a now forty-three-year-old Yujin Mikotoba standing before him.
After supper, Sholmes follows Mikotoba back to his hotel.

Because Neil always knows. He is as fluent in Andrew’s micro-expressions as he is in German and French. He knows which head tilts mean “go on” and which ones mean “shut up.” Without ever asking, he learned what it meant to see Andrew wearing double layers of long sleeves, or taking multiple showers in a day, and learned to hand Andrew the car keys.
That has always been the most terrifying thing about Neil — his patience to wait, watch, listen, learn. The prospect that if Neil were given enough time, there would be no part of Andrew that was just Andrew’s anymore.
“He has to know,” Andrew says.
