    You've never really considered your ability a superpower—you can just… read objects. It's almost like they're talking to you and telling you their stories themselves, though that would be crazy, of course. Mostly they just complain to you. All this being said, it came as a total surprise when less than an hour after getting the keys to your new house in Coolsville, you heard a knock at the door and opened it to find a short, red-haired woman holding out an official-looking badge.

    "Hello!" she says. "I'm Maggie, Coolsville's resident private investigator. You can talk to objects. Will you help me with a case?"

    "Umm, hi," you say. "Nice to meet you?"

    ‘Volt stares at Eddie for a while longer. Eddie keeps fighting the urge to stand and run, unable to handle this honesty. Volt brings out something in him that he doesn’t think he can unpack, quite yet.

    Volt places his own warm, broad hand on top of Eddie’s. His fingers curl around it, and Eddie feels them trembling slightly.

    “Thank you,” Volt whispers, his voice hoarse.

    Then the dam breaks.

    Tears stream down Volt’s face, silently at first but then punctuated by soft sounds that sound like stifled hiccups.’
