"But you do not want one," Benedict noted, his stomach sinking.
“I did not say that," Sophie corrected, turning towards him and taking his hand in hers, playing with his fingers. "I know I want to be a mother, someday. Someday soon, I think. But I do not think I can be only a mother and wife. I need other things to occupy me, something beyond running our cottage and doing chores. I need something ...”
She cut herself off, clearly frustrated by her inability to explain. That was alright; Benedict understood her completely. "You need something that you are passionate about. Something that drives you, like my painting does for me."
Sophie struggles with how to occupy her time now that she's no longer a maid. Benedict does everything he can think of to help.

Sophie takes Posy's hands in between hers and says, "Breathe, Posy. It's all right."
The younger woman follows the advice and exhales quietly, before smiling largely again and continuing, "And you and Mr. Bridgerton look so handsome together! Oh, I cannot imagine you marrying anyone better. He is so kind and gentle and attentive, is he not? I don't doubt he'll make a wonderful husband for you, and I'm so glad he's not marrying Rosamund, of all people! She doesn't at all deserve--"
And then Posy covers her mouth and looks around them. "I apologize, Sophie. I didn't mean to be so rude."
"You are not," Sophie comforts her. She looks behind Posy - half-expecting Rosamund and, god forbid, Araminta, to be behind her. "You came alone?"
Here, Posy looks slightly bashful. "Not exactly," she replies. "Although I did not come with Mama or Rosamund, if that would ease your mind!"
