“Dr. Robby?” He smiles. “Are you leaving for your sabbatical?”
“Not yet. I still have a few more days.”
“Oh,” he nods, before that faint blush colors his cheeks again. “It’s going to be a rough two weeks without you, but we’ll manage until you come back.”
“Dennis.” Robby says haltingly. “I’m not coming back, remember?”
“What? Why not?”
“The new job?” Robby tries, but his expression remains confused. “The one I told everyone about before your accident? You don’t remember that either?”
“Accident…”
Dennis’ eyes grow unfocused, muttering something to himself as he stares at his lap, fiddling with his thumbs. Then his gaze snaps up. Again, surprised. Again, delighted.
“Dr. Robby?” He smiles. “Are you leaving for your sabbatical?”—
After an argument about Robby’s resignation from the Pitt, Dennis gets into a car crash that makes him unable to retain short-term memories. Including the fight they just had, and Robby’s imminent departure. It’s up to Robby to nurse him back to health, and choose which truth to tell him.
Or, Dennis gets anterograde amnesia.
