Summary
The one night stand Jim Kirk has with the Vulcan passing through Riverside is a welcome break from the monotony. It's good, very good, but so fucking weird Jim's sure he's never gonna forget it. He's not quite expecting to run into Spock again in San Francisco. A second one night stand turns into a weekend, turns into a lot of weekends, turns into Bones joking that he's living half his week at Spock's apartment.
But! But, and this is very important: they're not dating.
What also turns out to be important is Spock's job, which Jim never bothered getting the details of. Starfleet Officer and a bartender-slash-bouncer? That's fine. Starfleet Academy Instructor and cadet? ...Less fine.

“So let me get this straight,” said Bones, “you’re going on a date with a Vulcan you’ve never met, but he’s also your best friend?”
"It's not a date!" Jim insisted.

What’s he thinking? Daria projects.
Rostus sighs, almost dreamy. He’s surprised to feel another telepath. He hasn’t had mental contact in– Rostus’ face falls. Oh. Oh, darling.
Is he okay?
He’s so psionically starved it aches from all the way over here.

Well, it's all right, we're going to the end of the lineIt’s almost the last day on the job for Castellan Elim Garak. One or two loose threads to tie up and then he can retire home to his books and his garden and his doctors. Surely everything will work out fine?
What might have happened after The Crimson Shadow and Enigma Tales.

Bookmarker's Notes
Exceptional look at Garack as he navigates setting down his power as head of state and moving into old age. Closed door, low fire. Deep love for cities, colleagues and the beauties of life. The big bad is how scary it can be to reckon with monstrous things you’ve done in the past, as well as who you are now that you’ve completed your tasks.
