With a new map, a potential new lead to getting one step closer to achieving the most important goal in her new life, she finds herself below the ruins of a science institute, with the breathing body of a woman from before the end of the world.
The message left from the people from the old times is another burden to bear. What they want from her. What she wants from her. She can't provide.
She's not a lifeline, no matter what the starry-eyed woman may make her believe.

When Zoey visited her family in Burbank, she didn't anticipate running into a huge wolf-like demon. And it bit her. But she’s sure it’s fine. The bite will heal. And the fevers and chills and aches she’s having are just side effects of the rabies vaccinations the ER doctors gave her because she couldn't tell them the animal was a demon. And those side effects continue for a month because she’s having a bad reaction to the subsequent vaccine doses, which sucks but she’ll be fine. It’s all going to be fine. Right?

Rumi clinked her glass against Mira’s. The sound vanished into the music. “Big assumption that you’re better company.”
Mira’s eyes roamed and she tilted her head.“I’m very good company. Especially when I want something.”
Rumi felt the words land low and warm. She took a sip to steady the sudden dryness in her throat. “And you want something?”
“Right now?” Mira’s knee brushed hers under the bar, lingering. She lifted the cherry garnish to her lips and sucked it into her mouth. “Desperately.”
