The end of her sword hovers above his shoulder, right beside his neck. Any sudden movement, and she would have him incapacitated -- perhaps permanently.
"You killed my husband."
The accusation echoes around them, her voice shrill with equal parts fury and horror.
He grabs her blade with his bare hand, thickened with callouses from years of fighting, and pulls the rest of the weapon away from her grasp. Drops of his blood fall to the ground from the new wound on his palm, but if he feels any pain from the cut, he does not say anything.
"I am your husband."
After years of war end in a call for an armistice, an arranged marriage is proposed to maintain the new and fragile peace between two kingdoms. Rey, captain of the Rebels, the elite warriors of her kingdom, has volunteered to be a bride of the former enemy, the Knights of Ren, in order to seek vengeance for her fallen friend -- by marrying the man who killed him, Kylo Ren.

Carrying the Empire to victory, Lord Darth Vader and his daughter, Leia Skywalker, now Darth Veil, cut down the rebel forces with the power of the Dark Side of the Force. Veil thrives, working in tandem with her aging father and commands the undefeated forces of the Empire, and oversees her son, Ren Skywalker directly as he does the Empire's bidding.
But now, there's been a disturbance in the Force, and in young Ren's mind. They have all felt it; the Skywalkers and the Emperor himself. But they aren't the only ones. On a distant dessert planet, a young girl feels a darkness drawing near, morphing into a hand, reaching out towards her. She is afraid. Something is coming.

Ten months after the Battle of Crait, the Last Jedi and the Supreme Leader of the First Order have kept their bond tightly shut, allowing the seeds of their mutual rejection to blossom into hurt and anger. When the location of the Resistance base is revealed, Rey must make the ultimate sacrifice: the lives of her allies and friends, in exchange for yielding her freedom to the First Order, indefinitely.
But new threats soon lead to the discovery that Rey cannot draw lines between the Dark and the Light as easily as she once thought, and blur the boundaries between hatred, lust, and—eventually—a deeper bond than neither she nor Kylo Ren could have ever conceived of.

Summary
Rey escaped from Jakku with Finn but had no intention of joining the Resistance. Finn's attempt was in vain, for Rey did not think herself capable of joining a cause when she was already struggling to figure out her place in all of this.
When chaos erupts, she is mistaken for a Rebel and taken captive by the First Order. To her unpleasant surprise, the Master of the Knights of Ren has other plans for her upon discovering her connection to the Force.

“Where are you taking me?”
No answer.
“What is this about?” Rey pressed.
Again, nothing.
“Why do you always wear that helmet?” And without pausing, she added, “Is it because you're shy or just ugly?”
Kylo lowered his head slightly and spoke in a quieter, menacing voice, “If you value your life Scavenger, I suggest you be quiet.”
She took a mental note: mention the helmet again.
