    "You look like him," Bucky says. No prompting, no nothing. He just speaks, like this is a thing he does.
    "What?" Steve asks. He didn’t really hear it, too stunned by the fact that words were coming out of Bucky’s mouth to understand their meaning.
    "You look like him. So did Pierce." His voice is soft, gravelly from disuse. "Is that why they picked you?"
    Steve’s heart plunges like an elevator with the cables cut. “Buck, it is me.”
    The hard line of Bucky’s mouth softens just a little. “Sure,” he says.

    The Winter Soldier thrashed, drowning. It was taking forever. His mask seemed to be stuck. He pulled on it, struggling to draw breath, sinking and resurfacing, clawing at his face, the panic in his eyes terrible.

    Steve's would-be killer. The very worst HYDRA had ever conjured. A symbol of death and everything he stood against. And Steve just couldn't bear it. He was ready to go, but this guy clearly wasn't.

    The premise: the Winter Soldier's mask doesn't come off quite as easily. Meaning, Steve never saw Bucky's face, and he didn't hold back during the fight on the Helicarrier. This is where the story picks up and is no longer canon-compliant. Though, I've stolen some ideas from the sequels and deliberately contradicted some future plot points/established canon.

    “Sergeant Barnes?”

    “Oh, hell no, don’t call him that, man,” Sam warned.

    “Captain Fuck Off!” Barnes shouted over him. “Fight me!”

    Steve didn’t know whether to laugh or just slink away. He managed to combine the two by pacing two steps and snorting instead. Like a bull.

    “I’m gonna need you to calm your ass, Barnes,” Sam said as he went limp again, obstructing Barnes’s struggling under him. “This is so undignified. That is Captain goddamn America.”

    “Captain goddamn America!” Barnes repeated, louder. And angrier.

    Steve cleared his throat again. “I’ve been looking for you,” he told Barnes.

    “I hope you brought lube this time!” Barnes shouted.

    For better or for worse (usually worse), Steve Rogers has been the most famous guy in the room for a while. And though newsreels have given way to YouTube, people's reactions haven't changed much in seventy-some years. Steve's become an expert at keeping his head down and getting on with his life.

    A head-on collision on a busy street sends books flying and sweeps Steve off his feet. The point of impact has a name: James. A charming mess of long hair, thick glasses, and a crooked, not-quite-smile. If he recognizes Steve, he chooses not to comment, placing him firmly in Steve's good graces.

    As far as Steve can tell, they might be Bogie and Bacall all over again, save for the group of idiots with selfie sticks who surround them. But for once, the request isn't for Steve.

    Which begs the question: if James is James, then who the hell is Bucky?
