He felt the shift in the man’s face as he evidently grinned through bloody teeth. Matt could hear the way his lips curved from the sucking of blood on teeth and the wince as the cartilage in his broken nose shifted.

With the idea of Extremist in mind, a crazed scientist is set on 'curing' his daughter with his own version no matter what it takes.

Summary
Zuko got a lot of things from his mother, her eyes, her hair, her heart, but those things aren't held in high regard in the Fire Nation palace. After his mother vanishes and his father ascends the throne, Zuko has to do his best to be the prince his father expects him to be, but since when was his best ever good enough. Without his mother's protection, things go from bad to worse and at 13 he ends up disfigured for the crime of caring too much.
This fic is a dark divergent au where Zuko is burned but never banished and things take a turn for the worst. Finally on the day of black sun, Zuko decides to stand up for himself and leave the palace to join the Avatar and defeat his father. Somewhat a retelling, but entirely from Zuko's perspective.

Summary
The gang is adjusting to life in Ba Sing Se when an unsuspected discovery lands them in custody of a surprisingly well-mannered Zuko (though his temper is a nasty thing). Exiled, powerless, and with a ridiculously large bounty on his head, Zuko has to decide how he's going to let the rest of his life play out. Trust grows gradually through trial and error, through war and laughter, and maybe just maybe through a belonging Zuko never imagined he'd feel again.
