    Ilya glanced at Sveta. They were behind the school, savouring the hour Ilya had between classes and hockey practice, both sipping on the chocolate milk their school had supplied during lunch.

    “Does he ever, I don’t know, hug you?” Sveta asked, and Ilya hated how she looked at him. Almost like she felt sorry for him.

    “Sure he does,” Ilya said, shrugging. “When I win at hockey, I guess.”

    “And Alyosha?”

    Ilya had to actually think about this one. And he felt uneasy when he realised that no, he’d never quite seen Grigori hug Alexei. “He’s not very good at hockey,” Ilya said, disliking how meek he sounded.

They’d learned each other’s patterns silently, like they were casing each other. Jason would watch for warning signs of Roy’s drinking, and Roy would somehow always know when Jason’s PTSD was flaring up, even before he did sometimes.

    But trauma-bonded as they were, they didn’t interfere in each other’s coping mechanisms.

    Ilya shifted him gently, until Shane was half across his chest, head tucked under Ilya’s chin. The steady thump of his heartbeat under his ear was a metronome for Shane’s still unsteady rhythm. Shane let his eyes close.

    The thrumming in his chest was still there, quieter now but never totally gone. But recognising he wasn’t alone, that Ilya would never leave him alone steeled his nerves.
