He’s living in a haze, in a blur of PTSD and heartbreak, feeling like he’s lost a limb and can’t catch his breath because each night he comes home to the silent flat and doesn’t worry about toxic chemicals in his dinner or the risk of walking around barefoot because there’s not a madman living with him anymore. In fact, no one’s living in the flat anymore, just a shadow and an empty shell.

‘You’re the new girl,’ the bouncer said, offering Xie Lian a kind smile.
Xie Lian felt herself blushing, for a reason that seemed to escape her entirely.
‘Xie Lian,’ she said, leaning over the stage to shake the stranger’s hand.
‘A real name?’ The bouncer’s smile acquired a feline quality as she took Xie Lian’s palm. ‘I’m honored, Xie Lian. In that case, call me San Niang.’
Xie Lian’s cheeks felt hot. Luckily, it was not Xie Lian on that stage. Not entirely.
‘It’s a pleasure to befriend you, San Niang,’ she smiled. ‘Since we’re so close, you wouldn’t go behind my back and tell on me, right?’
San Niang flashed her teeth.
