Summary
Maelle took over the Canvas, which Verso has several issues with. 1) He's still alive, 2) Maelle won't leave, 3) he has complicated feelings for a man he let die, 4) that man has been resurrected and fucking hates him, and 5) that man has been showing up at his house uninvited when he's fucked up. He really didn't think he'd be alive to face the consequences of his actions, but he is. The guilt has hardened into a pit which has taken up permanent residency in his chest. Unfortunately, he has no option but to keep going.

Gustave had been ready to sacrifice himself for his sister.

With Renoir’s final Gommage looming over them, Gustave is constrained to accept co-leading the expedition with Verso, a powerful Alpha. To add to Gustave’s frustration, his own Alpha dynamic has weakened—command lacks authority, need for control is secondary and his sensitivity to pheromones is deficient. As if he needed all of that while trying to save the canvas…
Apparently, such was the price of being reborn from old chroma.
But the true cost lingered…

Summary
Before Maelle leaves the canvas for good, she fulfills Verso's wish to be mortal but also makes him promise to look after Gustave. Even though he's reclutant at first, Verso quickly discovers that maybe it won't be that difficult to keep that promise. Gustave's company is not so bad and maybe he does have it in him to try to enjoy life again.

Summary
Verso had thought himself prepared for this. He had rationalized what needed to be done - for it was a necessity - and he thought he'd made his peace with it. What was one more mark in a ledger already drenched in blood? But here, now, in the aftermath of a violence he is uncomfortably familiar with, he falters.
It had to be done, he tells himself. A lie, a justification. One that he has told so many times before that it has grown smooth and worn. It tastes bitter on his tongue.
