It was a totally unconscious reaction, completely irrational, and she was sorry the millisecond the knife left her hand. She had some luck; the knife had horrible fucking balance and she wasn't the type to practice with throwing knives anyway when a good blaster would do. As a result, it thudded into the wall of the main hold about six inches from his face, leaving the room frozen.

Summary
Her mom flees Purgatory as soon as she discovers she's pregnant. She runs far, far away and hopes to God it's far enough that even if one day he finds a way out of the Ghost River Triangle he won't find them.
She marries a good man and gives her daughter a nice life, raises her to be good and strong, teaches her to be kind and soft.
She names her Nicole.
Eventually, Nicole finds her way back to where she came from, and her mother realizes broken-heartedly that you can take the girl out of Purgatory, but you can never take Purgatory out of the girl.
Nicole's mother thinks it's her curse; Nicole thinks it's her legacy. Neither of them is wrong.

When the Arena falls and Brutus dies, Lyme leaves for District 13. It's soon clear that Alma Coin is less than perfect, but with her best friend dead and no other options, Lyme vows to make the best of her decision. Meanwhile, Brutus' youngest Victor joins President Snow in the Capitol to be the symbol of loyalty and the voice of her people as District 2 prepares for war.
The twist: when Brutus fell, the hovercraft team who retrieved his corpse fought to resuscitate him, refusing to stand by and watch their hero die. A second rebellion — split off from District 13, fearing that Alma Coin had gone too far — saw their opportunity to gather fighters and a potentially valuable symbol, and recruit them to fight against both the Capitol and District 13.
The Victors of District 2 are now split along five fronts: Enobaria in custody in the Capitol; Lyme and Claudius in District 13; Petra, Ronan and Odin in the Capitol; Brutus and the Peacekeepers who turned traitor to save him in District 8; and the rest at home in District 2, mourning and waiting and fearing whatever is to come.
Some things will change, some will not, but one thing is true: District 2's Victors have the chance to make it out alive.
