Summary
Caspian can’t help but notice how carefully Peter handles the battered old shoebox, the tenderness with which he traces his fingertips along the fading silver Sharpie scrawled wobblingly across the lid.
“Did I ever tell you,” Peter begins quietly, voice strangely reverent, “about Narnia?”
He looks up at Caspian, then, head-on for the first time all day—since that night, even—and Caspian, throat inexplicably dry, can only shake his head. Peter nods slowly, more to himself than Caspian, it seems, and then he’s tucking the box carefully under one arm and standing.
“C’mere,” Peter says. “I want to show you something.”
(or, peter stops running.)

Summary
Caspian finds him in the rapier practice room off the main office—sweat-soaked, tight-lipped, cutting ward knots around their practice dummy with grim and silent concentration.
After a moment of observing Peter’s brutally precise cuts and patterns, Caspian steps into the room proper, palming a practice rapier out of the barrel against the wall, and approaches barefoot across the mats. Without breaking stride, Peter wheels round to face him, falling easily into a stance better suited for human combat, rather than spectral—as though he’s known Caspian was here the whole time without Caspian needing to say a word.
Knowing Peter, he might well have.

Summary
Caspian swallows roughly and presses down. The boy’s gaze, previously fixed on some far-off point above them, snaps from distant to sharp in a second, like a blade drawn from its sheath. He stares upwards at Caspian, mouth twisted up with something more than pain.
They’re very blue, his eyes, Caspian notices again. He cannot be a Telmarine, then. He’s far too fair. Perhaps he’s from Archenland? Terebinthia? But why is he here? Why his sword, unsheathed; his clothes, fine but ill-fitted to his rawboned frame?
“Sod it all,” the boy half-laughs, half-wheezes. Caspian tries not to shudder at the way it makes torn flesh slide beneath his fingers. Nearly jerks back when the tip of one thumb slips into the open wound, warm and wet. “You’re him. Prince Caspian.”
(or, caspian's first meeting with narnia's high king goes more than a little awry. somehow, this ends better than anyone expected.)

Summary
For just a moment or two, Peter lingers before the army of tiny flames, and Helen finds herself crossing the space between them to stand quietly at his side. For a few heartbeats, they watch the candles flicker.
And though later she will never know for certain what makes her say it, Helen asks, very gently, “Who is it for?”
He does not look at her when he lets out a long and ragged breath and all but whispers, “His name was Caspian.”

Summary
“Caspian,” Peter says, and it comes out softer than he plans. Caspian startles lightly, nearly shies away like his own steed before realizing it’s only Peter beside him. Immediately, his tension eases. Destrier settles. The hollow in Peter fills.
“Yes?” Caspian asks. The slanting afternoon sunlight renders his eyes to gold. A petal from the fistfuls the cheering crowds threw into their path is caught in the ends of his hair, and his crown is still askew.
Without really meaning to, Peter reaches up and nudges it carefully back into place with the very tips of his fingers. Caspian is utterly still under his touch, eyes wide as he stares at Peter, and probably at least one of Peter’s siblings is watching them right now, but Peter finds he doesn’t care.
“Your crown was crooked,” Peter tells him, and brushes a stray strand of Caspian’s hair from his face as he lets his hand fall away, because he is suddenly more than a little bold.
(or, peter’s never been very good about letting people in, but he’s trying. he is.)

Summary
“It’s nothing. Just—” Caspian hesitates. “You should do that more.”
“Laugh?”
Caspian whispers, “Be happy.”
Peter is quiet a moment before he replies, eyes still closed, “I suppose the circumstances haven’t exactly allowed for that of late.”
There is a rawness to his face and the way he says it that reminds Caspian why both love and bruises are things that are called tender. But he does not draw away from Caspian’s hand, even as Caspian feels his pulse stutter, stumble, and speed by a hair.
“I think,” Caspian tells him softly, “they’re different, now.”

Summary
“Aslan knows that unless I have blood, as the law demands,” she proclaims viciously, turning and raising her voice for all Aslan’s camp to hear, “all of Narnia will be overturned and perish in fire and water. That boy will die on the Stone Table…” She pauses, regarding them. A tiny, razor-sharp smile lifts the corners of her lips, her eyes. Edmund is stiller than Peter has ever seen him. Still as stone. As death. As one of the Witch’s statues. The smile grows to a smirk as she finishes, “…as is tradition.”
Before the Witch can say anything else, before Edmund can shrink further into himself or Lucy can cry, before Peter can allow the dark froth of fear sloshing in his stomach to rise any higher—before Peter can consider the consequences, he says, “Take me instead.”

Summary
The first time Peter takes a blade to her hair, Aslan is dead, her sisters are nowhere to be found, and there is an army outside the tent waiting for her to lead them, regardless of her feelings about the matter, regardless of the pit of dread at the bottom of her stomach or the sweat clinging to her palms, regardless of the little voice whispering in the back of her mind that she doesn’t have what it takes to do this.

Summary
“I think we should ask Aslan to postpone the coronation. You can’t possibly be seen wearing that.”
“Do you think?” Caspian asks, sincerely. Peter can only glance at his eyes, wide and warm and worried, for a moment. The crown is harder on the eyes but easier to look at.
“I’m only pulling your leg,” he says, laughing as a reassurance. “But I will put my foot down when you’re king.”(or Peter, watching a new king be crowned in the ruins of his old kingdom)
