Kel retrieved the basketball with shaking hands, having just missed for the umpteenth time that night.
He had told himself again and again that Hero didn’t mean it. Kel told himself he didn’t remember a word Hero said. But it had been years, and he still couldn’t get over it.
His memory was usually… flawed, to say the least, but why not now?
Hero’s words sliced through his thoughts like knives as he readied himself for another shot.
"...It should have been you, not her."-------

That’s why Aubrey’s betrayal had been so painful. If they were all just scared and confused, why had she called Kel names? Why had she turned against them? Why had she begun to bully Basil?
Kel hadn’t understood.
But as Basil’s pitiful cries rang in his ears, as his hands recalled the way Basil’s had trembled, as his mind dusted off the hazy image of Basil’s rivers and rivers and tears -- he may have begun to understand Aubrey’s actions just a little bit better.

Kel knew he ought to be more grateful, because if there was anything spending so much time in Senema Hospital’s Oncology Ward had taught him, it was that there were too many people out there who’d do anything for just one more birthday. But he was in so much pain—up his left side, his chest and upper back, his neck. The only time he was pain-free was when he was deep in the mire of his subconscious, where he could be twelve years old again, cancer such a foreign concept that he didn’t even really know what it was.
(Kel is sick, and no one knows how to deal with it.)
