Sonar does not know why, but the light is alluring, for some reason. The constant blink blink blink sets his brain alight, as if each extended ray was an electric zap to his soul.
He loves it. He hates it. He thinks, maybe, it is an omen. Of what, he is not sure, but Punch Up tells him that the flickering only began when Sonar returned, so perhaps there is some correlation. Some mystery.
(During the in-betweens — the times Sonar rests between dispatches and snack breaks — he has counted every time the light flashes. Twelve thousand, six hundred, and eighty-nine.)
