Addled with anxiety and an overall aversion to people, Light’s calculated “mastermind” impression of himself falls flat the moment he has to face reality instead of the mischief and solace his own daydreams have to offer. Through journaling and creative writing, he keeps tabs on all of his mundane shortcomings and relies on the support of a certain special friend to ease the distress of every minor inconvenience life throws his way.
For a while, the coping mechanism seems to work. After all, a writer’s life isn’t nearly as interesting, puzzling, or even romantic as their craft can make it out to be…

Summary
Light and L have been best friends since their elementary days, playing together at school and having countless sleepovers in their shared neighborhood, anywhere one boy would venture, the other was quick to follow.
Between eventually moving across town and changing schools, Light gets caught up in the excitement of making new friends and finds himself less in tact with his other half. Though strange feelings arise when he comes to find that L was just as well off without him, and through jealousy and denial arises their dreaded end to a happy life with one another.
But it doesn’t have to stop there. Reunited at their town’s local high school, Light spots his ex-friend in passing: a phantom of dead friendship he just can’t escape. Summary
After years of attending online school, L moves to an on-campus setting and signs up for To-Oh University’s film club in a reluctant effort to regain some footing in his social life. Among the club’s members, star student Light Yagami makes a resounding impression, and L can’t help but bite at the young man’s uptight mystery.
Stakes are high when Light catches onto L’s trail as well, and their growing dynamic becomes a race to uncover each other whilst hastily outrunning their own murky pasts.

He doesn’t know what his band mate’s problem is, if there even is one. Light can’t exactly digest everything among the chaos and his own swinging drumsticks, but L continues leveling him with this look —down, up, down again— as those long fingers glide along his guitar, the rest of his lanky body still turned toward their packed crowd ahead.
Things seemed normal until now. What the hell is wrong? Light tries to think as he continues drumming along. His lips purse, and along the seam they stick together, unfolding in taffy texture when he suddenly remembers he’s got lipstick on.
Oh.
(Light wears lipstick to their band’s latest concert and assumes the worst out of L’s wordless reaction, yet can’t help secretly harboring a hope for the best too…)
