    Summary

“Stranger?” he whispered, eyes wide and mouth gaping in awe.

The shape twitches, what Hob assumes is the mass of his tail giving one firm stroke as if in reply. The hairs on the back of Hob’s neck stand as goosebumps break across his flesh, eyes locking on two white orbs that appear around where a face should be. Hob felt himself tipping forward unconsciously, his feet leaving the ground as he dangled more over the ledge, unable to pull his gaze away from the haunting figure beneath. It was calling to him, those reflective eyes, bright as stars. If only he could stretch himself a little farther, maybe he could reach his stranger finally.

Or: Hob's class is at the zoo, where a pretty mer-creature catches his eye

“I have something to ask of you, my elder brother.” Dream began, without much preamble. “I do not ask lightly, nor frivolously, and in exchange, I shall gladly offer whatever boon or service you might wish to ask of me. It is a matter most close to my heart, for it concerns…”
Dream paused. The words still held a strange weight to them that made them difficult to speak aloud.

“..it concerns my soulmate, Hob Gadling.”

    Summary

“Soulmates.” Hob says, simply, and it feels like old magic to speak it into existence, to forge the bond between them into words at last. “You and I are soulmates. And I think that you are lonely, that you need and miss me when we’re apart... just as much as I miss you.”

“Soulmates.” The Stranger repeats, flatly, his sonorous voice barely a rumbling growl. “Hob Gadling, we are not soulmates.”

Or: Hob has known that Dream is his mildly star-crossed soulmate since their first meeting in 1389, but believes they have a mutual understanding not to acknowledge it; Dream, meanwhile, was under the impression that the Endless have no soulmates whatsoever, up until their sixth meeting in 1889.
Finding out they're wrong comes as a bit of a shock to both of them.

Hob Gadling is a broken man.

He’s been a broken man since the head of an up-and-coming mob family murdered his wife in cold blood and left him for dead. Hoping to do whatever it takes to allow his wife to finally rest in peace.

But when he meets a shy, sweet, and fascinating man at the local pub, he begins to re-evaluate his thirst for vengeance.

    Summary

Mr. Robert Gadling may be tolerably handsome, of an amiable disposition and in possession of a good fortune (for a tradesman), but is it enough to tempt Morpheus, the 14th Viscount Amaranth? Will the months Mr. Gadling is to spend at the Amaranth country mansion as a result of a wager between the Lord Amaranth and his elder sister allow the unlikely pair to develop a friendship—or, perhaps, even a forbidden attachment?

A series of rousing events involving balls, duels, play readings and meddling suitors lie between the Amaranth household and their return to town come winter—events which may forever change the viscount’s opinion on the merits of life in the country and, more importantly, on the balance between duty and the pursuit of happiness.
