After a rabies exposure, the virus must travel to the brain before it can cause symptoms. Therefore, the incubation period may last for weeks to months depending on several factors such as location of the exposure site (in relation to the brain) and age; in extremely rare cases it could be dormant for years.
Rumi thinks about this one frequently, lying in bed at night; the idea that you could be wasting away at any moment in your life. A poison in your veins with you none the wiser– like a ticking bomb just waiting to go off.
You would need to get bit or scratched first, of course, and if you took the right precautions you would likely never know. And Rumi has never been bitten anyway. She’s fine.
Absently, she scratches at her shoulder– skin tight.also known affectionately as the “rabies rumi” fic. i promise she doesn’t actually get rabies.

Rumi closes her eyes. Slowly, almost practised, like she’d rehearsed this many, many times before, she calls her sword and lifts it. Not to wield, but to offer. Like a knight asking for a king’s blessing. Take this, bless this so that I might defeat the monster, so that I might purify this land.
“Kill me and fix what was never meant to be.”
Zoey stares. Mira breathes, and the gok-do on the floor blinks once, twice, before bursting into sparks and disappearing entirely.
“What the fUCK, Rumi?!”

Rumi is still not a hundred percent sure why she agreed to this objectively ridiculous “tutoring” session.
When it comes down to it, she thinks she's mainly doing this for Zoey, because Zoey is the only kind, genuine person at this whole damn school, and Rumi wants to help her. Zoey is absolutely hopeless with boys, and she needs help with her confidence before she tries to date one. Rumi sort of…didn’t mention the fact that all her own experience is with girls, but she’s pretty sure Zoey already knows. Kissing is a gender-neutral skill anyway, and Mira is going to handle the other part (thank god).
It’s definitely not because Mira made intense eye contact with her in the bathroom mirror last week while applying lipstick way too slowly. Or because of that time Mira coolly demolished the boy who was trying to score points by talking shit about Rumi at lunch.
Nope, it’s definitely not any of that. Rumi just wants to be a good friend to Zoey. A best friend. A friend who has never once been paralyzed by the desire to find and kiss every single one of Zoey’s freckles.
