He felt stupid about being so sappy over something as simple as Luke changing the lights in the diner, but it just felt alien to him, someone caring that much.
He thought back to being small and Liz telling him to stop embarrasing her as he screamed and cried on the floors of supermarkets and schools, he thought of being a teenager and locking himself in his room because Liz's boyfriends were disgusted by his 'freakouts', he thought about his teachers at his elementary school punishing him for not answering them when he felt like his lips were glued together and his vocal cords wouldn't let him, he thought of building up his guarded persona, using as few words as possible, all of them biting, because no matter what he did no one liked him anyway, so why bother? He thought of getting lost in books and writing because it was the only time he felt understood.

Or Luke shows how much he cares, Lorelai gets called out and Jess kisses a boy because I don't believe in slow burn.

Summary
It’s clear now that pain is not a means to an end. It just exists, and lives longer the more you remember. And Mac remembers everything. Every look that wasn’t met, every word ignored. Every time the lit end burned. He doesn’t need the scars to prove it. That cigarette is still burning. The ashes are still blackening his hand. They never stopped.
Or, Luther dies and Mac questions himself and the nature of reality.

It‘s the Rapture, Mac thinks sometimes. Everyone deserving has already been saved. They‘re just rotting, down here.
He looks at Dennis, sleeping relatively peacefully at last, even if shivers shoot through his body every so often, and knows that probably, that‘s the reason he wasn’t taken, too, curled up in their blankets. Why His eye passed right over Mac just as it passed over Dennis, over those they've seen crawling in the streets or the neighbors that have been eerily quiet for days.
Watching Dennis' chest slowly rise and fall, listening to the soft sounds of his breathing, Mac finds himself regretting that fact less than he‘d have thought. They‘re still together, at least. Hell with Dennis or heaven without him; Mac has made his choice a long time ago. Even if hell is on earth.Bookmarked by coreyfogelmanic
