When they part for a moment, shallow breaths puffing from ruddy and swollen lips, Robert, without thinking, admits through a heavy exhale, “This is it.”
“Huh?” Her lips pull to one side into an amused smirk, her brow lifting with the motion. Her hand hovers over his scarred chest, unsure before shaking off any uncertainty and planting her palm against his chest. Delicate fingers splay along his collarbone, the warmth of her touch bleeding into him and slowing his breathing.
“This,” he nods between them, “This is the best part of my day,” he says softly, no dry sarcasm dimming his words for once.
“Sex?” She frowns. Robert laughs, and it's all in his chest, making her soften and smile.
“Well, no, I mean coming home with you and being Robert and Mandy.” It hits him then, how much he wants all of it, the laundry and the cooking and the stripped-down versions of themselves that have no masks or heavy metal to conceal anything. “At the end of the day, I just want Mandy.”

She’s beautiful in any sense of the word. John had known it back when he first saw her propped up on the back of Nel II, her hair done up in a delicate chignon and her cheeks flushed from the heat and something else to match the heavy rouge painted on her lips. He knows it better now as he sits on an old rickety crate with the cold rim of a beer at his lips, watching as she shrieks and laughs.There’s a certain airiness to the echo of her voice and a looseness to her shoulders brought on by the drink, but John can appreciate it much the same. The white ruffled hem of her gown twirls around her in a flurry as Uncle spins her, the drink warming her and granting even Uncle some leniency. For once, John feels calm, and it ain’t only owed to the liquor warming his belly.
Mrs. Marston, he thinks, testing the name in his head like it carries an honorable legacy rather than one of bloodied fists and drunken Scots. Behind it had always been a line of angry men and down-on-their-luck girls, but Abigail carries it with pride and poise. John finds himself doing the same now that the Marston name is tied to her.

When Mandy yawned, Robert turned his head slightly, watching her out of the corner of his eye, exhaustion lingering in his expression. Despite the painful effort it took to speak with the definitely broken ribs, he asked, “Could I walk you home?”
Mandy looked Robert up and down, and then actually laughed at that, her eyes crinkling up around the edges, blue eyes reflecting the sunlight. Robert felt his heart tighten, although it wasn’t out of shame or embarrassment. She wasn’t laughing at him.
“How about I walk you home?” Mandy offered instead, rolling her shoulders back in a half shrug. Her lips were still pulled into a soft smile. “I think you need it more than I do.”
