Lan Wangji, cool and pristine as always, gracefully sidesteps to let Wei Wuxian fall face first onto the stone stairs. The Imperial Censor looks at the fallen Imperial Marshal with disgust barely hidden in those golden eyes, gritting out in a shocking informal—almost callous—manner, “are you sick?”
Wei Wuxian clings to the man’s robes and cries, “yes! Sick in love with you, Lan Zhan!”

“Good morning, Your Majesty!” Alastor greeted brightly, the corner of his lips digging into his cheeks, his teeth bared, “I’m your new language and communications expert!”

Summary
Shikamaru knows something happened during Naruto's first C-rank mission.
The first and most obvious clue is that Team Seven comes home all banged up from a supposed simple escort mission and gets sent straight to the hospital, their lauded jōnin sensei included in the harangued dogpile.
Second is that Shikamaru’s old man clams up about the details tighter than he would with an S-rank mission despite Shikamaru and his mom's combined questioning efforts.
And third is, well, Naruto herself.

Now, someone walked into the room. A boy, awkwardly standing at the side of his bed, looking over him worriedly. His hair was brown and scruffy, and he had big baby doe eyes and a yellow-and-blue horizontally-striped shirt like a cartoon character. The window was lighting him up like he was important to Mike’s narrative. The curtains are blue, thought Mike, this boy is light. I love metaphors. Maybe he was high on the pain meds. Upon seeing him, Mike felt a great affection, a great peace. Plus, he had long eyelashes. Mike almost giggled to himself. He was definitely a little high.
“Hi.” breathed Mike.
“Hi.” he said, hesitating.
“We’re friends?” Mike asked hopefully.
Or: During the Party's final battle with Vecna, Mike is gravely injured and loses his memories. He wakes up in a hospital only remembering a handful of inconsequential little things, like how much he loves a boy who seems like light.

They were finally free. The sky had returned to its natural blue, the ground closed up, and the fog of black smoke no longer hung over Hawkins. Mike had to keep reminding himself of that fact. Everything was perfect.
Maybe too perfect.
OR
Post season 5 fix-it, where everyone was Vecna'ed and the world did "end," and now they have to figure out how to get back home. But the way to get home might suck more than if they were to stay in the messed up, distorted version of Hawkins. At least for Mike.

Will releases her hand, even as they walk out of the gym doors together. "Works out for me," he tells her, "I have that project for art I have to finish up anyways." He pauses, hesitates. "Will you be okay without me?"
Max takes a breath, and then gives him a shaky smile, one that doesn't quite reach her eyes. "I'll have your tape," she says, wiggling the wires of her headphones. "See you after school."

“You’re bleeding”, Will whispers, and then, as if the realization strikes just now as he says it out loud, his voice increases in volume, but shakes harder all the more, “Mike, there’s— there’s blood pouring from your mouth.”
Mike would have been perfectly content with never exploring the depth of his repressed feelings, if it wasn't for the deadly flowers blooming in his lungs.
