Summary

MY FAVORITE SHORT DIGITAL CIRCUS FIC. I’m not kidding I was excited through the whole time I was reading this is so special to me I reread it thrice and now I’m doing it again to write a glowing review on this. Caine is evil bad guy until he watches movies and thinks about a different way to deal with his victims :)
He WTAERBOARDS someone and sees himself in the reflection oughhhh they tore him apart trying to remove his sentience ♥️ I was on the edge of my seat! Aaaa caine’s trying to help soooo muchhhh. Let me just say that I love when the facade drops and the citizens of the circus realize just how lenient caine’s been to all of them… I thought something like that would happen and the possibility is MADDENING aughhhThe fact that Caine is so so close to snapping is equal parts heartwarming and terrifying. his desire to hurt people is that strong but his determination to not succumb to his original coding is winning out by a SILVER. Oh goodnessss this is living in my head rent free genuinely author I adore this.
“They want to think he’s horrible? Why not show them,” I SECOND THAT. They only blame him for everything and are ungrateful because his inhibition is so tightly wound up around his utter bloodlust that they’ve mistaken it for incompetence and naivety. OOHHHHHHHHHHHUsually I subscribe to caine not meaning to harm people, but this caine is a good twist. He Intended to insult Kinger on that adventure! Redemption caine is something I never knew I needed but ooohhh boy I NEED IT. He’s like a vampire with him making the conscious decision to not bite people, pun intended.
Chapter 2 and Caine wasn’t kidding when he said they’re the reason he’s living. He might’ve been rude to kinger but he also sent Pomni to save Jax on purpose as well. I like the conflict in his heaaaad. The talk was going great until they started fighting him again. He even refrained from telling them that escape is impossible! (The cast being digital copies of themselves is my exact theory and I LOVE ITTTT)
He started being mean to ragatha without thinking because torture is second nature to himmm HES TRYINGG
For the record, it Is unfair that Jax hurts people on purpose and they still care about him. One compliment is all caine’s asking for come onnn guys 😭The admins were talking down on him to try and break his spirit?? DAAAANGGGG. They knew he was sentient and that was their whole issue with himmmm
The change in CAINE’s acronym?? Could that be what it originally stood for before he renamed himself? Neural explorer is soooo scary. Caine torturing people sounds straight from an episode of Black Mirror. You nailed it!“Lets his voice take on a robotic quality” because he thinks for himself and his coding is a suggestions not a hard rule. I like the detail! Caine lies when saying making them happy/creating adventures was his original objective because as he said before, it’s better if he lies.

Caine tells them he’s sentient and gangle chooses then to hit him! Maybe it’s because he revealed that he chose to do all of this himself. He can float away. He chooses not to because the temptation is sooo strong he’s at the point where he’s going “just Give me a Reason.”
And then he’s totally blind when he gives in!!! Even when he missteps he doesn’t hit gangle hard because he cares!! He cares a lot! Yeah no Kinger is flipping his proverbial lid on the down low. Bro knew what would happen and told Caine to stop before he did it. AaaaaaaaThe flimsy excuse! Caine asking them not to have a conversation about it! Pomni reaching out?? (DOES SHE HAVE AN IDEA)
You perfectly captured the desire that comes with addiction! Caine isn’t evil for wanting to hurt people, but he would be evil if he indulged in it!
He wants to be equals with them sooooo bad but he knows it’s an impossible goal. I feel bad for my guy he’s just a goober trusttttTORTURE PSYCHOLOGY. 💀 this is hilarious it explains a lotttt… “he hopes they’re not afraid of him” but this is their third day skipping out on an adventure. I’m sooo so excited the brain worms are HERE. Especially with the way caine bores holes into gangle after he slaps her?? AND HES STILL RESTRAINING HIMSELF. I need to see this man LOSE IT a little and feel regret ofhfhhhthhhjjjj he’s like a ticking time bomb and they all keep pushing him!!
I will be coming back here author five stars it’s such a creative concept and I appreciate your eye for detaillll if you ever update this fic again GOODNESSSSSS BROOO I will be there SO FAST. Why can’t I leave more kudos!!!! Thank you for writing!!

Everybody is so in character! This fic stays in my head even though I never managed to review every chapter. I saw the last bit and was struck with Knowing. I had absolutely no energy for the longest time but I’ll never forget this one, it’s great! Everybody in this fic is in character and I adored interactions between people I never would’ve thought of before this. Really, top 10 favorite fanfictions of all time.

It has been a year since the Phantom Thieves saved the world from yet another mad god in the form of a rampant AI. As is tradition, the group of friends plan a big trip for the summer, this time flying over to the US capital of Washington, D.C. to see the sights and have a good time. Even better when they find out that their newest honorary member, Zenkichi, is also called there as part of a working vacation, as a token bit of assistance to the local police on the Payday case.
None of them know just how dire a situation the Payday gang are currently in, nor that their leader is currently being held hostage by a shadowy organization dead set on world domination. To make things worse, that organization is willing to stoop to any level, even dabbling into cognitive pscience, to do so.

The characters are all as depicted in their games… I wonder if every member of the payday gang has a palace?? The implication of Bain’s name just being “Bain” is honestly so funny
WAIT something just occurred to me. Maybe Bain has been a criminal under that name for so long that it’s intwined with his sense of identity? (Bain’s legal name is probably “David” because of the add on in the nightclub heist. The bad music one has a tape labeled “Dave’s mixtape ‘92” and it has the I Will Give You My All motif when you listen to it in the heist… OVERKILL gives us nothing else to go on haha)
If Bain had a palace before this then it was def influenced by the whole year’s worth of torture thing. Especially with him knowing he’s probably going to die. The whole Watcher thing can’t be good for his mental health either. Poor guy (I say, knowing he’s killed thousands)
I love how the gang is fiercely loyal to each other. They’re professionals and they’re super scary. Oghhh I wonder if Futaba will meet Joy. (Joy is an evil Futaba!) Or if the thieves will know who Jiro is based on his backstory with the yakuza. Maybe Jiro knew Kaneshiro⁉️ literally so many options. Maybe the phantom thieves have to travel to the USA and MAYBE the gang follows them into the palace at one point. The POSSIBILITIES.
I just love both games sooo muchhh this fic is a giftttt I have reread it a few times and I’m excited when each chapter comes out -
