And so when Suyin takes up the position after the previous handmaid left the palace in tears, she doesn't expect her employment to be a particularly long one. But warmth and friendship soon take root in the cracks of the princess' facade, piercing through a loneliness she hadn't even realised existed.

    Mostly canon compliant, but with fluctuations to and from canon, side plots, and divergent character motivations. Significant canon divergence post Book 3 of ATLA (not yet published). This fic serves as a character study for Azula, and explores daily life in the Fire Nation beginning before her introduction in the show.
