Summary
The worn lighter is smooth to the touch, comfortingly familiar in his hands as he flips the lid and strikes a flame. It flickers brightly into life, and he brings it close without needing to look, letting it lick over the tip of the cigarette until it catches and begins to burn. He leans back and closes his eyes, breathing in the smoke, slipping the lighter back into his pocket for next time.
From the kitchen, he can hear the muted sounds of Sullivan preparing cocoa: the singing of the kettle and the clink of mugs and spoons. They blend with the soft classical melody in the air, and he lets it all wash over him, filling his senses with smoke and music.
When Valentine calls on Sullivan after a bad day at work, all he’s looking for is some company from a friend. Troubled by memories both recent and from long ago, he’s given up on getting any sleep. But Sullivan is determined to help him relax, and while they begin with cocoa, the rest of his plans for the evening might turn out to be even hotter...

“All right, Chris?” Trevor said quietly, keeping going with the circles. Chris’s hands were soft in his, a little warmer now than they had been before.
It took a second for Chris to register that Trevor was speaking to him. He blinked his eyes open, slowly, like a cat waking up from a long nap. “All right,” he said at last, the softest Trevor had ever heard him talk. His eyes had gone vague, staring at their interlocked hands. There was a half-sliver of a fond smile on his face.
It was then, and only then, that Trevor finally realized: he recognized that look and that tone of voice and that smile.
He didn’t really have the luxury of fully processing the concept that he had just (accidentally) (platonically) dommed his boss, ex-flatmate, and current crush object effectively enough that Chris was visibly out of it from having his wrists tied. From the looks of it, you’d think hardly anyone ever touched Chris kindly, or told him that he was doing a good job—
Oh. Yeah. Christ. That made sense, then.
