Summary
Years ago, Stan Pines died under strange circumstances. His body was found, funerals happened, Pa was too ashamed to show up, Shermie too busy, Ma went... so did Ford...
And Ford learned a lot while at the funerals, more than he would have liked to. Like the fact his brother lived out of his car, of all places... At least, the car gave him a way to summon his brother's spirit, to talk one last time! Or it should have. It never worked... Ford kept the car anyways, for old times' sake.
In other news, a little over 30 years later, 13 year old Mabel Pines came back to Gravity Falls a year after her brother stayed back there for an "apprenticeship" with their great uncle Ford or whatever... Meaning she was alone to face their parents' divorce. And even now, her brother ignored her for his "anomalies". No big deal. None at all... Not at all the reason why she tried to leave the home at 1 am, only to be met with a homeless-looking ghost with no memories who decided to haunt her.
At least the nameless ghost is a good friend to prank Gravity Falls with!

“The author of the journals,” Stan said, finally standing up. "My brother."
The author of the journals, his brother, looked at the miniscule crowd that had arrived by accident to greet him. The author looked between them all, and Dipper could see reflection on his face from the light of the slowly dimming portal. The author’s gaze finally settled on Stan, and his posture stiffened.
“Dad?” The author of the journals, his brother, choked out. He sounded absolutely baffled.
Stan’s expression turned equally baffled, clearly not anticipating this. “What?”
*** *** ***
The portal has opened, and spat out Stanford Filbrick Pines, exactly as he was when he left. Thirty years has passed for the outside world, but only a few hours have been lost for him.
It changes things. Especially with the worst memories of Ford's life still hot on his tail, and eager to make a reappearance.

Summary
One day, Mabel and Dipper were sent to live with a family member they had never met who was manifestly unsuited to childcare for an entire summer. It was the greatest adventure of their lives.
Their parents did not tell them why and don't plan to.
Joss William Pines got out of prison at the beginning of the summer. His mother and step-father don't want him near the twins until they are sure he's clean safe to be around. On the day Dipper and Mabel return - and despite the insane news reports from Gravity Falls - he takes the same bus in the other direction, far away from old "friends" in San Francisco and the constant risk of addiction relapse.
Will is nineteen years old, desperately unhappy, has no hobbies and few possessions, hates nature, and thinks Ford is a stuck-up asshole. Will is struggling with all his might to be a mature adult who doesn't start fistfights or commit felonies, but doesn't know how else to spend his time. He's the opposite of a Gravity Falls character.
Also he keeps hallucinating a weird voice when he's in the woods.
