He does his best not to look back. Looking back never did any of the mythological heroes any good—not that Goro is delusional enough to believe himself an actual hero. Regardless, it serves no one to dwell on the past, to ponder impossible what ifs. To acknowledge that thing in the edges of one’s awareness, that vague insanity, that paranoia, that haunting.
One day, Goro turns around in the midst of a crowd. He looks back.
Of course, there's no one there.

That’s probably why Goro broke into Ren’s house. Calling it a house is a lie. It’s a cafe he is sleeping in, that’s all. The place is nice though. The coffee and curry is good, it’s quiet, it’s out of the way, and it’s rather peaceful. The counters and tables are clean, but Goro can still see the years of use even in the dark. The tables and counter friends, families, lovers, enemies, rivals, have all talked at, sat down and broken bread together. Maybe they don’t all like each other, but a place with the charm of Leblanc can have anyone get together for a good chat.
Maybe, in the future, Goro can come back and see Ren working behind the counter again and chat with each other like old friends. Maybe then, Goro won't be so much to handle, maybe he’ll finally be stable and himself. Ren was able to do it and still find a spot to fit in, so maybe Goro just needs his group of family like friends. Maybe then he won’t be so jealous, so angry, so pushy, so weird, so fake.

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross is full of shit, Akira thinks.
How can you define grief as five measly stages? How can you define grief at all? Akira shoves his hands into his messy curls and lets out a groan while sitting at Leblanc’s counter.
Grief is not all that simple to Akira. It comes in spurts, in squiggles, in lines, in blobs. It’s not nearly close to linear, and it’s not even close to five stages. Maybe ten. Maybe twenty. Hell, to him, it seems like the stages are endless. He’s stuck in a loop of grievance that shows no pity towards him.
Or, Akira never thought he'd have to incorporate Maruki's lesson on the five stages of grief into his own life.
