Summary
Diluc ends up grievously injured during his very first mission as Cavalry Captain while protecting Kaeya from what would have been a fatal attack. Kaeya, naturally, blames himself for letting this happen, but he has to set that aside when Diluc blames himself even more and begins to panic about how their father will react.

Summary
Ayato is approaching his twenty-eighth year, the state of emergency in Inazuma has finally calmed to a manageable level, Thoma is overseas. The public has turned its eye to the Kamisato clan’s head. He is not young anymore. There is no crisis that needs his constant attention, there is no war. There is no excuse for Ayato to ignore the steadily rising pressure for him to marry.

Ayato sends Thoma on a trade negotiations mission to Mondstat during Windblume in his stead, so he won’t be in Inazuma while Ayato is attempting to organize his own political marriage. Thoma reconciles his past with his present as the festive season makes him consider love and freedom, while Ayato wrestles with his duties and his conflicting personal happiness.
At the same time, several disconnected scenes from their childhood— going from the day they met to the present, details the growth of their relationship and how they got to where they are now.

“It was all my fault. I’m so sorry, Dad. I'm so sorry,” he sobs. “You were so much better than I will ever be. I don’t know how to do this without you here. I don’t want to.”
Diluc falls to his side, curling his knees up to his chest. “You could have lived, and here I am instead, wasting everything you gave me. I don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t know what you’d want me to do.” His breath hitches, and another wave of tears rolls down his face. “I’m all alone.”

Suffocating under the weight of grief and feeling disconnected and lost, Diluc's passive suicidal ideation starts to develop into something more concrete. He's struggling with his father's death, what happened to him during his time away, and the damage he's done to his relationship with Kaeya. Forgiving himself seems impossible, and it's getting harder and harder for him to get out of bed every morning.
Meanwhile, Kaeya just wants his brother back, Adelinde wants Diluc to stop running headfirst into danger, and Jean wants her childhood friend to smile again, and they - along with some new friends Diluc makes along the way - are determined to show Diluc how loved he truly is.
