Everything Aventurine said and did was to elicit another response with which he could construct his profile on Dr. Veritas Ratio. Naturally, Veritas left their first interaction as quickly as he could for his own safety.
But he slept with Aventurine a week later.
After Aventurine is hospitalized, Dr. Veritas Ratio moves to the Intelligentsia Guild’s Pier Point location to monitor his recovery. There, Veritas learns two things:
1) He might need help navigating the social circles in Pier Point.

“Not according to the Company, I don’t.” Aventurine smiles and takes off his sunglasses. He reaches over and goes in for the kill, lifting the bottom of Ratio’s chin to meet his eyes. No one ever resists the eyes. “You have no idea how special you are—in that I was sent to retrieve you.”
Ratio says nothing. He doesn’t really move.
In which the IPC just can’t seem to convince Veritas Ratio to join the Intelligentsia Guild, so they deploy Aventurine to a tiny university city-state, where he must charm the good doctor into their fold.

Summary
Aventurine and Ratio enter a pocket dimension sealed within a Curio, seeking the treasure rumored to be inside. According to the intel Ratio's team gathered, it was hidden behind a series of trials, meant to test the bond between two people. Sure, Aventurine couldn't say for certain whether Ratio even liked him, but they could've never made it as far as they have as business partners without some degree of trust and cooperation, right?
By the time he realizes how utterly twisted the Curio is, it's already too late to back out. He and Ratio are trapped, at the mercy of the long-dead maniac who created this room, and it's going to take every ounce of strength they have to survive.
