“Oh,” Sammy draws back from the springs, taking a couple of steps in Mary’s direction. She quickly walks to meet him. “Hi, Mary.”
“Mind if I join you for a dip?” Mary gestures toward the springs, continuing her pace toward them so that Sammy will follow. He does, though visibly swallowing as he nods.
“I guess not,” he says, and he doesn’t meet her eye.

“Did you…did you want to ask me about Sylvain?” Sammy asks, and even though Jack is at least six feet away, a table separating them, he can see Sammy swallow. “I mean, I know you’ve never met anyone like me before.”
Jack hadn’t been going to cross the distance between himself and the staircase, but his legs start moving without any input from his brain. Maybe he’s imagining Sammy’s hesitant smile. It’s probably just a grimace. But Jack sees it all the same when he gets close enough to put an arm on Sammy’s shoulder.
“If you ever want to talk about it, we can,” Jack tells him, fighting the urge to just slide his arms around Sammy’s waist and pull him closer. “But I don’t need to write it down. We can just talk as – as friends, okay?”

Summary
“Hi, welcome to –” Emily cuts her usual spiel off within a second of seeing who’s there. “Oh, it’s you, Benny! What a surprise!”
Emily shuts her laptop – she should ask Ben about her article, he would know about what happened on the night of May 1 – but it doesn’t matter too much right now. Ben rushes behind the desk to scoop her up into a bear hug. It’s amazing how much force he has when he’s several inches shorter than Emily even when she’s wearing flats.
“I thought we’d come say hi,” Ben releases her from his iron grip, but his brilliant grin when he stares up at her never fails to make Emily flush. She doesn’t think Ben’s ever noticed her sweaty palms when he comes in the door, but she wipes them on her dress anyway before she looks up to greet Ben’s companion.

“Maybe that’s what’s got Wright all in a tizzy over you. I swear to God he hasn’t shut up about Sammy this and Sammy that in two fucking weeks. It’s enough to make me sick,” Herschel says. “Then again, Arnold isn’t much better. They keep telling me that I shouldn’t put you through the wringer until you’re feeling better.”

“Why?” Jack echoes Sammy’s thoughts exactly.
Ben stares up at them like they’re stupid. “Ponytail holders. I need to see your face when we have a conversation! Don’t worry, I’ll just get the black ones. Unless you want a multi-color pack –”
“Black is fine,” Sammy says quickly, knowing immediately that he is not a multi-color pack from Claire’s kind of person. He also knows with equal certainty that Ben absolutely is a multi-color pack from Claire’s kind of person.
