Summary
“Unlock the door, Hollander.”
Even though Shane couldn’t hear the exact words, he knew what Ilya said. He shook his head.
“Unlock the door, or I will break the glass. Your choice.”
Shane’s eyes widened again and he briefly hung his head as if regretting all of his past life decisions, and Ilya heard the resounding click of the unlock mechanism.
He felt wild, his mind in violent turmoil as he threw open the door and his palm clutched the back of Shane’s head, his fingers finding purchase in the coarse hair. “Are you listening to me?” Shane ducked his head in acknowledgment. “I’m going to call off my driver. You will not move. I am going to sit there-“ he pointed at the empty passenger seat. “-in this boring car of yours and I am going to find out why the fuck you are alone and who the fuck made you cry.”
*************************************************************
Inspired by Shane’s confession in The Long Game (*mini-spoiler*) about his whereabouts after leaving a certain Montreal nightclub in January 2017, Ilya leaves the club shortly after Shane only to find him pulled over on the side of the road, devastated.

Summary
You haven’t gone home with anyone else in ages, Ilya's brain treacherously supplied, you’d wait for him for months. At that thought, the slight itch in his throat quickly cascaded into a coughing fit, and this time he didn’t bother to cover it up. Little flurries of leaves spluttered onto the floor in front of him.
It’s reminiscent of that stupid documentary of Shane’s cottage, that one scene when they panned out to the lakefront and stayed there for a few seconds as the leaves fluttered across the camera. He hated that he could remember the whole thing by heart.
He heaved out a last cough to dislodge the last bit of mass clinging onto his mouth, but instead of the spikeness he was expecting, this was round. He opened his eyes, and a tiny flower bulb stared back. Great.
Or: Ilya gets Hanahaki.

Summary
Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov got married in secret and for two whole years, they lived their life quietly.
They broke apart quietly, too.
The worst part is that none of it feels right. Not their continued rivalry on the ice, not the divorce papers on Shane’s table, and definitely not the idea of saying goodbye. There are too many wounds untouched, too many things left unsaid, and too much love between them still.

Summary
“Shane, this is Anatoly Petrov and his husband—”
“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane blurts out before he can stop himself. Shane's shocked to see him now, a ghost plucked right out of his teenage years, his pre-MHL hockey days. He's even more shocked to see the modesty collar on Rozanov.
“Petrov,” the woman introducing them finishes weakly. “His husband, Ilya Petrov.”
__
Or: When Ilya is outed as an Omega, he's forcibly married off before he has the chance to break free and become an international hockey star. Years after the single game they played against one another, Shane and Ilya encounter each once again, and Shane helps Ilya escape the cage of his marriage.

Summary
Rozanov cocked his head. “You speak Russian? Or just the curse words?”
“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”
+++
Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.
And, after all, a little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, did it?
