“Do you want to play something?”
Bucky didn’t answer, his gaze flicking between Steve and the deck of cards.
Steve shuffled and dealt two hands of rummy, gesturing for Bucky to sit.
Bucky sat across from him and picked up his cards, his eyes assessing each of them with interest. Then, he rearranged them before glancing back up at Steve. He waited, because Steve had dealt and should go first because that's the way they always played, and the simple logic of that made Steve’s chest do something complicated.
He lost.. Badly. He was fairly sure Bucky wasn’t trying to beat him and was just playing, but there was something about the way Bucky laid down a winning hand that was deeply resembling Bucky Barnes.
“Best of three?” Steve asked.
OR
Steve refuses to go with Maria after the fight on the highway, choosing to stay prisoner in hopes of getting through to the Winter Soldier.

Bucky sat his book down.
"Not the same, obviously," Steve said quickly. "I don't mean-" He stopped, looking down at his hands. "It's easy to start to feel like you don't exist, without time keeping you contained."
He cleared his throat. "Steve," he said softly. "I should have said this earlier, but you know I'm glad you're back, right?"
Steve didn't answer right away, still staring at his hands. "Thanks, Buck."

Steve didn't decide to stay in the past after returning the Infinity Stones, but something delayed his return all the same.

Summary
“I wrote you a letter.” Bucky looked down and carefully folded the piece of paper. He got to his feet and offered it to Steve.
His brow furrowed. “What is this?”
“It’s the letter,” he explained.
Steve blinked. “You remembered an entire letter you wrote at basic?”
He nodded.
Steve looked down at the piece of paper and then back up at him.
“I think I kept it for a while,” he explained. “Must have reread it a lot, or something. I don’t know.”
Steve’s eyes started to mist. “You wrote me a letter.”
“I wrote you a letter.”
OR
Bucky was taken into custody during his visit at the Smithsonian, and Steve fights anybody who gets in his way while trying to get him back. Bucky doesn't remember Steve, but he knows him.

"The asset was for something. He had a purpose. He had missions and orders." Bucky released a laugh, bitter and hollow. "At least then I knew what I was supposed to be doing. Now I just—I wake up and I don't know why. What's the point of any of this if I'm just going to be empty forever?"

"I do know that," Steve said firmly. "You've already made progress, Buck. You've already taken pieces of yourself back and started building something. You have been since before I found you. Think of the words and the notebook—those are yours, you did that."

“Don’t do that,” Harry said, his voice low.
“Do what?” Draco asked again.
“Modify your reactions around me. Or coddle me, or whatever, because you think I’m being emotional or I can’t handle it or you’re worried about upsetting me. Everybody does it, and I hate it.” Harry exhaled harshly. “I can’t handle it from you, too.”
Draco sighed, twisting the ring around his finger. “You are my client, remaining neutral and unbiased is my job, Harry. So is making sure you’re in the proper state to handle-”
“Oh, screw you,” Harry interrupted.
OR
Harry comes home after a long absence and Draco is still learning of old ghosts. What follows is a slow, rediscovery of what it means to belong.. both to the world, and to someone else. Or.. Harry and Draco are doing their best.

Steve didn’t know whether to laugh or just slink away. He managed to combine the two by pacing two steps and snorting instead. Like a bull.
“I’m gonna need you to calm your ass, Barnes,” Sam said as he went limp again, obstructing Barnes’s struggling under him. “This is so undignified. That is Captain goddamn America.”

Steve cleared his throat again. “I’ve been looking for you,” he told Barnes.

Summary
