    After a very bad day at school, Izuku makes a split-second decision to take matters into his own hands while waiting for his train. He feels like he's stuck in a tunnel of intrusive thoughts where there seems to be no light at the end—

    That is until he meets a strange man by the name of Aizawa Shota; a teacher who's like no other Izuku has ever met before. Caring and kind, someone who actually listens. Perhaps there is a light at the end of the tunnel after all?

    Maybe not all Heroes need a license to be a Hero.

    This is the way the world works: the sun rises in the east. The strong come out on top. Bakugou Katsuki rockets through life like a comet and Midoriya Izuku stumbles after. If he believed in such things Katsuki would say it was written in the stars. That some god of war had looked at him and said this one. That he’d been passed along a line to get his blessings – genius, willpower, fearless ambition – and dropped off on earth.

    Then, of course, there is the question of Deku. The spitfire runt. Deku, no matter what the world does to him, never stops hoping.

    Until, of course, he eventually does.

     

    (Katsuki broke him. Snapped him in half like a twig and now has to scramble to put Deku back together. “We can do this, Deku," he says slowly. "There are so many mysteries that never got put to bed. Criminals roaming around looking to hurt people and you and me, we can fix that.”

    There’s a long pause. The comforter slips a little off Deku’s skinny shoulders and drowns him. “You mean like a team?”

    In that split second, Katsuki makes a decision he’s never even considered. He swallows his pride. “Yeah, Deku. We’d be a team.”)

    I could run away, Izuku thinks, staring at his desk. I could run away from home. I could walk out of school right now and get the train.
    It's by no means an unfamiliar thought, if a dramatic one.
    He thinks about running off a lot, but this is the first time he's thought about his way of actually leaving.
    Deku, say the words on his desk, Go where you’re wanted. Piss off. We don't want you here.
    Yeah, Izuku thinks to himself, I could get the train and go to Tokyo or something. Maybe a rural city.
    It's hard to keep going, and Izuku finds himself wanting to run. He doesn't know where, (not yet) but somewhere far.

    Someone kicks his chair, and he keeps his eyes glued to his desk.
    (Izuku knows that he is good at figuring things out, under the right amount of pressure. He can figure this out.
    He can find an answer.)

    Izuku, during his first year of middle school, contemplates running away.
    He contemplates escaping, getting away from all the things that haunt him, and finding a new life elsewhere.

    In the end, Izuku chooses to stay.
